Odor from the navel in children

Odor from the navel in children is a fairly common phenomenon, This is due to a number of diseases, but most often the fault of this fistula or cyst. They are formed when the urinary and bile ducts are not completely overgrown, but, as a rule, they are closed at an early age. In the case when these ducts are not overgrown, an umbilical-intestinal fistula may appear in the navel. Soon, mucus begins to form through it.

The fistulas are incomplete and complete. Incomplete fistula is more common. It manifests itself in the form of a slightly damped navel, but the skin around it is rather irritated. Fistulas from the inside lining the mucous membrane. It is its course and enables the specialist to make a preliminary diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment.

It happens that the umbilical wound does not heal for a long time, mucus secretions go from it . This is one of the symptoms of congenital navel disease. In this case, it is difficult to distinguish the fistula of the bile duct from the urinary fistula, because there are no characteristic, distinctive features. It is also difficult to recognize the incomplete fistula from the full, but to clarify the diagnosis, sounding is carried out, as well as an x-ray of the fistula. Complete fouling of the fistula is difficult to achieve in a conservative way, but it can be corrected with the help of a surgical procedure. In this case, the excision of the fistula is performed and then the defects in the walls of the intestines and the bladder are sutured.

There are congenital umbilical fistulas, which differ from those acquired. Incorrectly applied ligature when tying the navel in newborn babies may be the cause of the formation of chronic umbilical fistulas. That's why some babies stink from the navel sometimes.

The natural healing of the umbilical ring in newborns does not always happen, especially in premature babies, which is why the smell of the navel appears. Especially often the upper half of the umbilical ring becomes inflamed in the abdominal wall. It is there that the umbilical vein passes, which is surrounded by loose fiber. And when these tissues and places are irritated, a rather unpleasant odor from the navel of children begins to emerge.

When the baby begins to cry, the tension of the abdominal muscles occurs. This leads to a prolapse of the intestinal wall (i.e., the secret is secreted under the influence of intra-abdominal pressure). That's why the smell comes from the navel of the child.

After the umbilical cord disappears, and the ligated section of the intestinal wall becomes dead, the intestinal fistula begins to develop, from which an unpleasant spirit begins to emanate. There are cases when a vermiform appendage enters the ligature and this, too, can be the reason why the navel stinks. And when the fistula formed in this way becomes chronic, it adversely affects the overall well-being of the child.

The smell from the navel of children appears also in the case when umbilical fistulas are formed as a result of intraperitoneal inflammations. He will be especially strong when forming an abscess. When it is opened, the purulent discharge goes out, and an unpleasant odor from the navel appears. In this way, umbilical fistulas of the urinary, gallbladder, small and large intestine, and even the stomach may also occur.

After the baby is born, the navel becomes the most vulnerable place during the healing of the cord cut site. Therefore, during the first two years of a baby's life, each mother should follow the process of healing the navel and prevent it from becoming inflamed, much less forming a fistula and the appearance of a smell. In order to prevent painful phenomena in this place, parents should know what changes may occur in the navel of the child during this period. In case of fistula, cyst or odor appearance, you should always consult a doctor.
