Moscow and St. Petersburg: population and distribution by district

The size and pace of life of megacities are amazing. Huge areas, crowds of people, eternal haste and not even subsiding for a second life. And how here not to think: how many people live in megacities? The largest cities in Russia are Moscow and St. Petersburg. The population of these cities has long exceeded a few million. Let us examine in more detail how many people live in the two Russian capitals, and how they inhabit certain regions.

The population of Moscow: a characteristic

As in any metropolis, huge flows of people always flow into the capital. Today, Moscow holds the first place in terms of the number of inhabitants, not only in Russia, but throughout Europe.

The main groups of people living in Moscow are:

  • Residents of the capital (these are people who have a residence permit, or people with a temporary registration for more than one year);
  • Students who flock to the capital from all over Russia;
  • Tourists, the number of which is constantly changing;
  • Travelers who come to Moscow for a short time with business purposes.

According to unofficial statistics, the number of people living in Moscow in 2016 was more than 20 million people. Visitors are adding a volume to the city, but since they can not be calculated with accuracy, there is a huge error in the statistics.

Population of Moscow: statistics

Official data only takes into account confirmed information. Therefore, for counting, only those groups of people who have a permanent registration in the city are taken.

By the number of residents the capital is much ahead of St. Petersburg. The number of Moscow to date is about twelve million people. The general trend indicates an increase in the number of inhabitants of the metropolis: thus, according to Rosstat data for the period from 2003 to 2016, the city has increased by two million people. The number decrease is a rare phenomenon for the capital, but was noted in 1986, 1989, 1993.

According to official data, in the last twenty years the number of inhabitants of a metropolis living in Moscow has been steadily growing steadily. Statistics show that in 2010 there were eleven and a half million officially registered citizens in Moscow. And for six years, by the first day of 2016, the year their number has increased to twelve million three hundred thousand people.

Visitors arrive inhabited the city unevenly: expensive central areas are not accessible to everyone, besides the rabid rhythm of work is concentrated in the center. But sleeping areas are much more willing to accept both guests and all officially registered in the metropolis.

Distribution of population by districts of Moscow

To date, the composition of Moscow includes 21 settlements and 125 districts, which are united in 12 districts. Most of them are named according to their location on the map (North, West, Central), separately are allocated: Zelenograd, Troitsky and Novomoskovsk districts.

According to statistics of Rosstat, in 2014 the most populated district was the Southern (1754,613 people). At the end of the list is the Troitsky district (103365 people).

The most densely populated area was the Marino region, which is located in the South-Eastern District. At the same time, the district itself occupies only the fifth line in terms of the number of inhabitants in the megalopolis.

The smallest was Vnukovo settlement, it has a total of 3988 townspeople.

Due to the expansion project, adopted in 2012, the nearest settlements have been included in the capital, which increase the population of the city and the urban agglomeration as a whole.

St. Petersburg is the second largest and most populous in Russia, it will be discussed further.

Population of St. Petersburg: statistics

The northern capital currently occupies the second place in terms of "population of the city". St. Petersburg is the fourth most populous in Europe. The result is considerable. It's no wonder, because St. Petersburg is a huge cultural and tourist center of the country and the world, here, as well as to Moscow, flock huge flows of people: tourists, students, business travelers and those who came to visit relatives.

For 2016, according to the Federal State Statistics Service, in this megalopolis lived a little more than five million people. Over the period from 2003 to 2016, the population of St. Petersburg has significantly increased: per million citizens. Unofficial statistics have more than 7 million inhabitants in the city, and in the summer - up to 10 million. The decline was recorded between 1990 and 2009, but in 2010 the number of people living in the northern capital has increased dramatically and is still growing.

Just like in the case of any other settlement, Rosstat takes for analysis only those residents who are officially registered in the city of St. Petersburg. The number of residents of the city today is more than five million. There is a tendency to increase the city's permanent population.

Distribution of residents by districts of St. Petersburg

The population of St. Petersburg is amazing, but the agglomeration area allows placing even more people. As in any other large metropolitan area, residents of the Northern Palmyra unevenly populate the city, which means that there are both overpopulated and sparsely populated areas.

Today, the cultural capital includes eighteen districts.

  1. Admiralteysky.
  2. Pushkinsky.
  3. Vasileostrovsky.
  4. Frunzensky.
  5. Vyborgsky.
  6. Kalininsky.
  7. Central.
  8. Kirovsky.
  9. Kolpinsky.
  10. Seaside.
  11. The Krasnogvardeysky.
  12. Krasnoselsky.
  13. Petrodvortsovy.
  14. Kronstadt.
  15. Resort.
  16. The Moscow.
  17. Nevsky.
  18. The Petrogradsky.

In general, St. Petersburg has united nine cities, eighty-one municipal districts, and twenty-one settlements.

Rosstat calculated the population of the districts of St. Petersburg. The number of Kalininsky district has broken all records: 530 163 inhabitants in 2016. The smallest in terms of the number of townspeople was the resort area: 75,121 inhabitants.

The general tendency of the population distribution in the northern capital is such that the residents prefer to move from the center to the sleeping areas.

Megapolicy: advantages and disadvantages

A large number of people, considerable distances, constant traffic jams and high cost of megacities repel even the thought of visiting any of the capitals.

But the advantages and mass of opportunities attract crowds of new people to Moscow and St. Petersburg. The number of the two capitals is growing at a great speed today.

People are attracted by high salaries and a great chance to find a decent position and work to their liking. The traffic congestion problem today is very acute in every city in Russia. And the subway, at least a little, but smoothes out transport problems. Cities develop and allow to develop together with them: a large number of universities attracts students in them, and bright events, historical and cultural places and the opportunity to get to any point of Russia are tempting for any tourist.

Today, the population of Moscow and St. Petersburg is growing rapidly, when moving, it is necessary to assess all the advantages and disadvantages of densely populated cities, and only after that it will be possible to make the right decision.
