Methyluracil ointment - fields of application and dosage

Ointment methyluracil refers to a group of drugs that stimulate regeneration processes in tissues. Has high anti-catabolic and anabolic activity, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulating effect.
It is used for various injuries of the skin: burns, poorly healing wounds, diaper rash, furuncles and abscesses. It can also be recommended for the care of bed patients, as a preventive and curative remedy.

Used methyluracil ointment in the treatment of trophic ulcers, bone fractures and photodermatitis. In the latter case, the drug has a healing and protective effect.

Indications for use in the interior is leukopenia (including the resulting radiation therapy), anemia, peptic ulcer, agranulocyte angina, hepatitis, pancreatitis, severe poisoning with benzene vapors.

Analogues of methyluracil ointment are preparations "Levosin" and "Levomekol".

Composition, methods of application, dosage

Methyluracil ointment contains 100 mg of active substance (dioxomethyl-tetrahydropyrimidine), fat base is lanolin and petrolatum.
The drug is applied twice a day to the damaged skin. With external use, this drug does not practically penetrate into the bloodstream, so that side effects are minimized. Very rarely there is individual intolerance of the drug, accompanied by reddening of the skin and severe itching.

In the treatment of wounds and burns, methyluracil ointment is combined with antibiotics of the sulfonamide group and antiseptic drugs.

When taken inwards, the dosage is calculated based on the patient's age. So children from 3 to 8 years are recommended not more than 250 mg (four to six times a day), children from 8 to 12 years - 350 mg, adolescents and adults - 500 mg. The course of treatment for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract is from thirty to forty days. The drug contributes to the normalization of the nucleic acid metabolism in the mucosa, which is what causes ulceration.

Side effects: headaches, heartburn, weakness, allergic reactions.

Contraindications: myeloleukemia, hemoblastosis, leukemia (leukemia form).

It should be noted that the spectrum of application of this drug is quite wide. It is readily used by gynecologists, proctologists, dentists, ophthalmologists and pediatricians.

Often, methyluracil ointment for children and adults is prescribed for the treatment of stomatitis. In addition to wound healing, the drug has an immunomodulating effect, which is especially important in cases of fungal and viral infections. A methyluracil ointment is used, usually in combination with interferon and chlorhexidine solution.

In the treatment of eye diseases, the drug is used as an auxiliary. For example, with purulent inflammation of the eyelid (phlegmon), methyluracil ointment is used in combination with solutions of antiseptics externally.

In the treatment of hemorrhoids, methyluracil is administered rectally in the form of suppositories or microclysters (25 ml of starch paste per 4 mg of active substance). The drug does not have an irritant effect on the tissue, so it is well tolerated by patients. However, after insertion into the anus , a brief burning sensation can be observed.
During an exacerbation, to facilitate the patient's condition, it is recommended to combine ointment or suppositories with a wound-healing effect and local anesthetics.
