Jean-Baptiste Moliere, "Don Juan": a summary, the characters of the work

The famous comedy written by the great French playwright Jean-Baptiste Molière, Don Giovanni (a brief summary below) was first presented to the Parisian public on February 15, 1665, at the Palais Royal Theater. Only that is surprising, after fifteen performances Moliere removed it from the repertoire, and more during the life of the master it was not put and not published.

Moliere Don Juan: analysis of the work

In this play, the writer presented a scandalous image of a European nobleman who lives only for the sake of his love adventures and victories. His name is Don Juan. The heroes of the work of Moliere generally collectively included the characteristic defects of the society of that time, but, of course, they are not devoid of external charm and individual virtues.

So, the main character of the play is a passionate and straightforward, at times virtuous and honest person. The image of Don Juan by Moliere is not entirely unambiguous, he does not believe in God and treats with scorn public morals and morals, always ready to marry any beautiful lady who has conquered his heart.

Don Juan and his servant Sganarelle are always extremely honest, although he never listens to his opinion, but often he is interested in them. Noble honor and fearlessness help him without any doubt to stand up for the defense of his enemy - Don Carlos, who fought his opponent one against three. With people of low social standing, he does not stand on ceremony and can give a slap at any moment. Be that as it may, with all his amorous and passionate nature, Don Juan swiftly and steadily goes the road to Hell, Moliere is sure.

Don Juan (the analysis of the work confirms this) is more afraid of physical death than spiritual death. He understands that the whole society has long been mired in sins. And hypocrisy alone helps people to get along with their passions and not be afraid of social dislike and condemnation.

Moliere "Don Juan": a summary of the chapters

In the first part it is told that Don Juan was already bored by his wife Dona Elvira, now he is again in search of another beauty who can captivate his heart. His conscience did not bother him at all, because he once arrived in the city where he wanted to kidnap her, while killing her jealous team-mate. The court justified this fight, and so Don Juan did not suffer the proper punishment. However, the law of God certainly was trampled upon. This fact embarrassed his servant Sganarelle, who understood that the deceased in this city is full of relatives and friends who will necessarily want to get even with the murderer.

Servant

And then the comedy of Moliere "Don Juan" tells that Sganarelle in his heart of mind considered his master a filthy atheist, who strongly developed a beastly instinct. So, as he did with women, it was worthy of the highest and most severe punishment.

Donju Elvira he stole from the walls of the monastery, she, violating the vows, fully trusted him and eventually was deceived and abandoned. She became his wife, but this did not stop him in the adventures of "left", he married almost every month, this he literally mocked the sacred rite.

Tirades

His servant still sometimes found the courage to reproach the master for improper behavior and warned that it was not worth joking with the Sky. But Don Juan always had folded tirades about the diversity of beauty in this respect, the impossibility of forever tying himself to her one particular manifestation, the sweet desire to achieve the goal and how bored and dreary to enjoy what has been achieved.

These judgments from the human point of view are literally all to the point; this is what Moliere is unique about. "Don Juan" (summary) continues with the fact that when the master did not have the words to answer his troubled servant, he simply threatened to kill him.

Elvira

Doña Elvira could not understand and accept such behavior of her unfaithful husband and so she decided to understand herself and demand explanations from him. She followed him. However, he did not explain anything to her, only advised him to return to his monastery as quickly as possible. Doña Elvira endured these words humbly, did not curse and reproach her husband, only on parting predicted his imminent punishment and anger from on high.

The next victim

This subject will be further developed by Moliere. Don Juan this time chased the next beauty, which during a sea walk conceived to kidnap, but unexpectedly flew down a storm overturned their boat with Sganarellem. They were very fortunate, they were dragged ashore by peasants who were not far on the shore.

But Don Juan reacted to this lived danger as easily as he treated everything that happened to him. Before he could get ashore and dry himself, he immediately became interested in a young and playful peasant woman, and then he caught another, Piero's friend, who had rescued him from the water, and he started courting with compliments, even assured seriously that Must marry her. And when both girls were facing him simultaneously, he verbally turned out so that they were pleased.

The respectable Sganarel rushed to reveal the whole truth about his dishonest master to stupid simpletons, but the truth did not seem to interest them at all.

Hunting

Further on, the plot of his dramatic comedy, Jean-Baptiste Molière, is even more intriguing. Don Juan (the summary continues with this particular event) during the escort with these girls suddenly sees a rogue familiar to him, who warns him that twelve horsemen are looking for him around the area.

Don Juan goes to the trick and proposes to exchange dresses with the servant Sganarelle, which will cause that extraordinary joy. They changed their clothes, however, not so much as originally intended. The owner dressed like a peasant, and the doctor's suit was worn on the servant, and so he immediately began to rant about the virtues of this vocation, about the drugs prescribed by the doctors, but then he gradually passed on to the questions of faith. But his master again broke his assault with the words that one should only believe in two-two-four and two-four-eight.

By the way, you can type a whole quote from his words, they sound like a counterbalance, but not an argument, Molière emphasizes on this specifically. Don Giovanni, however, never thought of anything that could so agitate or touch his soul.

Vera

As they walked through the forest, a beggar came to them and asked for a copper penny, for which he promised to pray to God for his benefactor all his life. Don Juan and here acted in his usual role, offering a penniless golden luidor, if he is blaspheming. But we must pay tribute to the beggar, he flatly refused to do it. Despite this, our hero gave him a coin, and he himself rushed to help a stranger, who at the same time was attacked by three armed with swords and daggers. Together they were able to fight off the attackers.

Subsequently, from their introductory conversation, Don Juan realized that this was the brother of the daughter of Elvira. It so happened that he lagged behind Don Alonso - his brother, with whom all this time they were searching for the evil abuser of their sister, in order to avenge her suffering. Don Carlos did not know this offender in person, but hastened to help his brother Don Alonso perfectly knew Don Juan. And coming to them, he immediately wanted to punish him, but Don Carlos asked for a postponement in gratitude, to cross the blades with him some other time and in another place.

A statue

In general, the master and the servant continued on their way, when suddenly they noticed a magnificent marble structure and, coming closer, saw in it the tomb of the commander, killed by Don Juan. And above it stood a huge statue of a magnificent work. Don Juan was in high spirits and with a grin asked the servant to ask the commander if he would like to have dinner with him at his house today. Sganarelle timidly asked this mocking question to the monument and suddenly saw that the statue suddenly nodded his head. Then Don Juan decided to repeat the invitation, the statue and nodded to him.

Dinner

In the evening of the same day, the gentleman was in his apartment, and his servant, under the strong impression, tried to explain to him that today's event does not foretell anything good, but, most likely, looks like a warning, and that it's time for him to change his mind. But Don Juan demanded that he shut up immediately.

Misleading intrigue with even greater scope in his drama is developed by Moliere. Don Juan, however, did not really think of anything serious. The evening turned out to be very restless, and he could not at all calmly have dinner. At first different visitors came to him, then the supplier, whom he owed heavily, but resorting to flattery, he calmly guided him. Then came his father, Don Luis. He was extremely upset by the frivolous behavior of a dissolute son and spoke of the memory of his ancestors, which he tarnished with his unworthy actions. Don Juan was completely bored by his words, and his father continued that it was better to die early in fathers, so that their stupid sons would not bother them.

Lady

Hardly angry father left the house of Don Juan, as the servants reported, that a certain lady with a veil wants to see him.

And then brings to the tragic end of his work Moliere. Don Juan saw that Dona Elvira came to him to say goodbye. Moved by love, she came to him for the last time, to beg him to reconsider his life, because she was told that her husband's sins were already so great that there was not enough heavenly mercy for them. And that he, maybe, and live, there is not more than one day left, and it would be better to spend this day on repentance to turn away from the cruel punishment. From these words, Sganarel broke tears. The woman withdrew. Don Giovanni, as usual, did not take her seriously, but as soon as he began to supper, suddenly a guest came to him-a statue of the commander. The owner did not become dumbfounded, they quietly had supper, and, going away, the statue invited him now to return with a return visit. And he accepted this invitation.

Repentance

The plot in the same spirit continues to Moliere. Don Juan met his father the next day. Prior to Don Luis, rumors were heard that his son repented and decided to start a new life. Don Juan confirmed his intention to put an end to the past. Sganarelle was as happy as no one, but then the owner explained to him that all his words were just cunning and hypocrisy - a fashionable human flaw that can easily be mistaken for virtue and to which sin does not succumb.

How useful was this hypocrisy, the servant quickly became convinced when they met with Don Carlos, who demanded in public to recognize Don Elvira as his wife. But he, referring to the will revealed to him from heaven, for the salvation of their souls, convinces him that they should not resume their marital relations. Don Carlos dismissed him, but left the right to challenge him at any time to put the final clarity on this issue.

Omens

But Don Juan did not have long blaspheme, referring to the voice from above. The sky gave him a sign in the form of a woman's ghost with a veil, which she uttered menacingly, that he had very little left to appeal to God's mercy. The ghost in the meantime turned into an image of Time with a scythe in his hand, which immediately disappeared.

Then a statue of the commander appeared before Don Juan, she extended her hand to him, and he too stretched out his fear without fear, and instantly felt the invisible fire burning him and heard the fatal words of the statue about the terrible death of one who rejected heavenly mercy.

And suddenly the earth dissolved and swallowed it in its infernal flame. Many were Don Juan's death in his hand, but only Sganarelle was most worried about the fact that no one will pay him now.

That's how Moliere was cruelly ruined by his hero. Don Juan, whose quotations in the work are witty, but not wise, was too narcissistic and presumptuous, for which he paid in full.
