Insulation of the foundation from the outside yourself

No building is built right on the ground. With such erection due to the processes of weathering and washing out with water, as well as frost heaving, the structure will very quickly become unusable. In order to avoid this, the foundation is applied. In private housing construction, different types are used. So, what is the foundation? This is the name of the supporting structure of the house, part of which is underground, and some are outside. The one that is on the surface is called the socle. The quality of the foundation depends directly on the durability of the building and its operational characteristics.

The main part of the loss of heat from the interior of the house is through it. After all, he is directly in contact with the frozen ground in the winter. So whether to insulate the foundation - the question is superfluous. In this case, thermal insulation materials can be installed both from the inside, from the basement, and outside, along the outer perimeter. The second option is somewhat more complicated, but if the project does not provide a basement, it is the only possible one. We will consider it.

Insulation of the foundation from the outside usually implies the implementation of measures to reduce the thermal conductivity of the underground part itself, because it touches the ground exactly it. Sometimes measures aimed at additional insulation, apply to the socle. Most often, polystyrene is used for this purpose. This heat-insulating material appeared on the market relatively recently and looks much like styrofoam in appearance. In fact, this is the usual foam, but manufactured using special technologies.

To make the foundation insulation from the outside, first of all you need to remove the earth from its external walls along the entire perimeter. In this case, the soil should be chosen to a depth not less than the depth of freezing. The next step is the application of waterproofing to the walls. To do this, they are smeared with bituminous mastic and pasted with a ruberoid or some other more modern material.

Styrofoam using this method of waterproofing is mounted very simply. The foundation is warmed from the outside by pressing the cloth against the bituminous material heated at 5-7 points. The warm-up temperature in this case should not be lower than 50-60 degrees. If the waterproofing material does not allow this, the polystyrene foam is fixed to the bituminous mastic. Consumption of mastic can be from 0.5 to 0.8 kg per square meter.

It is also an acceptable option to fix the plates is also their installation using a PVC film. The only drawback to this method can be called the fact that between the film and expanded polystyrene, in this case it is necessary to lay geotextiles or fiberglass. For fastening, dowels are used. Especially try not to be, because the slabs will still be crushed by the soil. Dowels in this case are necessary in order to avoid their displacement.

According to statistics, more than 20% of heat flows through the underground part of the building's structure. Therefore, do not spare the funds and conduct the insulation of the foundation from the outside. As you can see, there is nothing technologically complicated in this process. After spending a little time, you can save significant amounts on heating the house. In addition, the insulated foundation is less destroyed. Therefore, the savings on repairs here are also obvious.
