Ichthyol ointment

Ichthyol ointment is a topical drug. The medicine is included in the group of antiseptic agents. Ichthyol ointment has a pronounced analgesic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect. The drug has a dark brown color.

With external use, no penetration of the active substance into the systemic circulation is noted.

The drug is a therapeutic measure for patients with neuralgia, eczema, joint pain, also shown with burns. In addition, the medication is effective in frostbite, furunculosis, festering wound areas. The medicinal preparation in the form of suppositories is used in the fight against diseases of male and female genital organs (inflammation of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, prostate gland, mucous uterus and others). Ichthyol suppositories are also effective in diseases of the rectum. In such cases, the drug is used after emptying and carrying out hygiene procedures.

The mechanism of action of the drug is based on the properties of the active component (Ichthyol). The substance is able to influence the permeability in the vascular walls, in the first place, arterioles, capillaries and venules - having a very small caliber. By adjusting their tone, puffiness decreases, pain disappears, and the overall inflammation decreases. Ichthyol improves tissue blood supply, optimizes the transport of oxygen and other nutritional components, and rapidly removes decomposition products from altered pathological structures. The analgesic effect of the active substance is due not only to a decrease in the exudative process (plasma "sweating" through the vessel wall) and dissolution of puffiness, but also by direct exposure to painful cutaneous receptors. At the same time, their initial excitation passes into a state of increased sensitivity threshold.
