How to number pages in Word 2007, 2010 and earlier versions

Each page in the document actually has its own number, but usually it is not shown. To number the pages in the Word, you need to refer to the header and footer menu. It is there that we need the function.

Consecutive numbering

Here is a simple diagram of how to number pages in a Word.

In versions 97/2002 go to the View menu and find the Headers and Footers item. The page will open the header and footer, and a panel for editing will appear. There are several buttons on it that will help you insert page numbers. The easiest way is to click on the first icon on the left. It's called the Page Number.
When you need to make a numbering of a certain type, you can use the Insert AutoText, Number Format and Page Setup buttons. In the AutoText menu list, you need the first and last two items. The format allows you to choose from a variety of options, how to number pages in a Word: numbers or letters, starting with which page, etc. And in the parameters of the page on the Layout tab, you can mark whether you want to distinguish between the footnotes (numbering) of even and odd pages. In the 2007 and 2010 versions, everything looks easier. The page number is on the Insert menu. Right-click over the page number icon and select the item from where you want to set the numbering. For example, you chose the bottom of the page. Another menu will appear, in which the appearance of the numbering is selected. Select the desired sample and double click on it with the mouse. Various options for setting "page numbers in Word 2007" can be set by opening the Page Number Format menu option in the Page Number menu. Here there is an item that allows you to start numbering from the desired page.
Controlling the appearance of even and odd pages in Word 2007/2010 is set by double clicking on the already finished footer. A tab called Working with Headers and Footers opens. In it, you need to tick the paragraph for different headers of even and odd pages. On one of the even (and then one of the odd pages), edit the footer as you need, again by going to the Page Number menu.

Arbitrary numbering

There is also a more interesting scheme how to number pages. In the Word, a document can consist of several sections. To start a new section, it is necessary in any version of the Word on the Insert menu to click the Break item. Each section can be quite different in appearance from another - have a different number of columns with text, a different direction of the text and including different headers and footers with page numbers. That is, within one document, you can number the successive pages, for example, from 1 to 10, and then again from 1 to 10, or even from A to J.
You may need this numbering, for example, to make a separate page count in an attachment to the main document. And if you use a new section on each page, you can number the pages in the Word document in a completely random order. Just put a break and repeat the recommendations above on how to number the pages in the Vord of the version you need.
