How to learn the basics of typography for 1 month

Typography is the process of presenting an oral word in printed form. Earlier this art was extremely popular due to the fact that a large number of various books, newspapers and magazines were published. Printed editions were in great demand, therefore, people who were engaged in printing were extremely in demand. However, today it can not be said that print media are experiencing their best age, as everything replaces the Internet. Naturally, newspapers and magazines are still published, but they are no longer the only source of information. It would seem that the typing and layout of the text should have become obsolete, and the people involved in this would be left without work. But in reality everything is completely different, because it is the Internet that has become the refuge of such people, because the information in it is still printed. Accordingly, the services of printers remain in demand to this day. Moreover, in them every day there is more and more need, because the competition is increasing, and every site wants its fonts and other aspects of this issue to be the best. Thus, if you want to learn the basics of typography, then you should take up this matter closely, since it is now very popular and can bring you a considerable income.

Typography and Web Design

Many people believe that you must necessarily learn web design in order to get the necessary knowledge of typography. But this is a very common misconception - the fact is that web design itself only affects the basics of typography, so if you do web design, you will not suddenly become an experienced professional printer. For this, there are separate courses, their own textbooks and additional information, which, fortunately, you can easily find on the net. Having coped with all the tasks, you will see the text document in a completely different way, you can operate the fonts and their sizes, you can organize the text on the page, and most importantly - on the site in the network. And the most pleasant thing here is that for this you will have one month, if you are clearly and purposefully engaged.

Learning the basics

So, when you start learning the subject, you naturally need to start from the basics, and in this case you definitely should not hurry. Calmly take a week to learn all the basic concepts, their relationships and conditions of use. Make sure that you can distinguish between the most basic fonts, know when to use this or that font, how to make accents, how different fonts differ, and so on. Study the structure of a letter in a font, because this will largely depend on its use - you need to know in which fonts the letters have rich ornaments, in which they are hardly visible, and in which they do not exist at all. Only when you already have a rich theoretical base on the basics, you can proceed to the next stage.

Combination and improvement

When you have enough theoretical knowledge, you can combine the study of theory with practice. The next step for you should be combining - combining fonts on one page or in one document. You should understand which fonts are suitable for each other, and which ones are better not to use on one page. So you can make your project richer, it will look much more attractive. As for improvement, here you have a huge number of different possibilities. You can change the accent, make the font larger or smaller in size, make it bold or italic, and so on. You can change the distance between lines and the space between letters in one word. All this requires serious preparation, so spend on studying all these issues and practical application of knowledge your second week.

Layout and placement

The third week should be spent on studying the smallest features of text placement. Even if you are making out one page of the document, you will most likely need to have different elements on different parts of this page. And it is very important that you understand where and what indents should be, how best to arrange this or that element, so that the overall picture is as harmonious as possible. In matters of web design, this point in general is incredibly important, since there very much depends on the ability to correctly position the elements. Also in typography - your text should ideally fit into the overall picture, complement other elements, combine with them and so on. The most important thing is to learn how to use a typographic grid, since it will help you to accurately and skillfully place text on a page of a particular document.

Creative

In principle, after four weeks you will be ready to undertake any basic orders, on which you can fill your hand. But why in that case need the last week? You will need it in order to connect the imagination and the creative - after all, as in the case of web design, each person can draw up a document - this is not such a complicated and quite mechanical work. Here, accuracy, ability to correctly enter elements and so on is important. But an experienced and popular printer is first and foremost an artist, he can create, he can combine fonts on the fly, change his project, make it unique. This is what you need to start to achieve in the last week of your training. Naturally, you will not be able to become a genius of creativity in just a week, but you need to allocate these seven days for similar purposes, so that you already have some reserve. You can start to develop your style, the sense of the text and so on, that is something you can not read in textbooks, that each person should have his own.

You are ready to begin!

When this month is over, you will understand that you are still far from being an expert in typography - but you already know very much, and most importantly - you know a lot. This will be your first step into a new world that can further earn you a lot of money, and most importantly - the pleasure of your favorite work.
