How to connect a modem as a router: 2 ways

Today's article is dedicated to those people who have a home Internet access through the old ADSL modem. Today many providers still offer the Internet through such obsolete technologies, but sometimes there is simply no alternative. One of these providers is Rostelecom. From this article you will learn how to connect the router through a modem "Rostelecom", but with other ADSL-modems it will also pass.

Connection diagrams

If at the moment you are using an ADSL modem connection, your scheme looks something like this: the telephone cable is connected to a splitter (or splitter). From this splitter one wire goes to the home phone (however, it may not be), the other - to the modem. And from the modem, the "twisted-pair" network cable connects directly to a computer or laptop. Such a scheme is actively practiced today.

The easiest way to connect a router through a modem is to create an additional link in this circuit as a Wi-Fi router. We just use the same "twisted pair" to create a connection between the router (WAN-port) and the ADSL-modem.

How to connect a wi-fi router through a modem: methods

To implement such a scheme, you can use several methods:

  1. Make the modem work as a bridge, and the router as an access point (that is, a router). In this configuration, you need to make settings on the router.
  2. The second method involves using the router as a "continuation" of the signal.

Note that the second method is the simplest. In this case, do almost nothing. Only a minimum is needed: configure the router to receive a dynamic address and activate the DHCP distribution mode. Most users know that it needs to be done, but they do not know how. To connect the modem as a router, where the latter will act as the "distributor" of the Internet, it is easy: in the settings of the router in the Advanced tab (the name of the tab can depend on the router model and the manufacturer) there is a DHCP option. It must be activated, and then any device connected to the Wi-Fi router will automatically connect to the Internet. Before connecting the modem as a router, you need to make sure that all the settings in the ADSL modem already exist. They are usually entered by the provider's employee.

The second way: how to connect a WIFI router to the modem

Given that the first option is the most difficult, it is worth analyzing it using the example of the most common D-Link router. So, insert the cable with a small connector into the modem's ADSL connector, and plug the patch cord into the LAN connector and connect it to a computer or laptop.

Modem settings

Now you need to enter the settings on the computer itself. Go to the Windows Control Panel (Start - Control Panel), find the "Network and Internet" tab and click on "Manage Networks". There we are interested in the item "Changing adapter parameters". We find "Connections on the local network", right-click and select "Properties". There you need to set all the TCP / IPv4 settings to the machine.

Now in the browser type the address 192.168.1.1 and get into the admin panel of your router. Here you need to enter the login / password pair. Type admin / admin (by default). In the appeared menu in the Quick Setup section you need to uncheck the DSL Auto Connect line and set the values for the VPI and VCI lines. They must be consulted by the provider. Also, these values can be specified in the connection contract, so do not rush to call the provider. At the point PORT, we assign the value "0". Now click on "Next" and opposite the value of Bridging put a checkmark. So we will transfer the modem to bridge mode. You also need to check the Enable Bridge Service check box and specify a name for the bridge. Next, we will be required to register an IP address and a modem mask. There we write: 192.168.1.1 and the standard network mask is 255.255.255.0.

Click "Next" and carefully look again at the settings. The system will ask you to save and restart the router. We agree and together with the modem reboot the computer to get a new IP address.

Now go to configure our Wi-Fi router. First of all, remove the cable from the laptop and insert it into the router. It must be connected to the modem through the WAN connector, with the computer - via any LAN port. Now we connect to the router, go to its settings in the WAN section and select PPPoE as the connection. Now you need to enter all the data that the provider provided to us (password, login), apply settings, save. After that, the router will distribute the Internet from the ADSL modem. Now you know how to connect a modem as a router, but there are more ways.

Sharing from the laptop

The fact that a laptop or a computer can be used as a router, and configure it simply, you just need to know how. You can connect a modem as a router using a computer only if it has a Wi-Fi adapter. On laptops, it is the default. The scheme will look like this: a small telephone cable is included in the modem's ADSL-connector, a "twisted pair" goes straight to the laptop from the modem. The laptop (or computer) gets access to the network and rips it through Wi-Fi. Do I need to configure this? Yes, but now there are special programs for sharing the Internet via Wi-Fi, for example, Connectify Hotspot. There are other programs for this purpose, but the essence is always the same. Also, you can share the Internet with the help of Windows built-in tools, but this is already a big topic for a separate article.

Conclusion

These methods, how to connect a router through a modem, work in 80% of cases. Depending on your model of the router or modem, the settings that were mentioned in the article may differ, but the essence remains the same. Therefore, do not navigate in this case to the names. In general, setting up the router and modem will not take you much time in the event that you did everything right.
