How to charge the battery to get the best performance

Many car owners, encountering for the first time the problem of discharging a car battery and deciding to charge it themselves, are asked the following question: "What kind of current should I charge the battery?". In order to realize this idea, first of all, it is necessary to have a starting-charging or charging device, which allows to convert the current supplied from a normal 220V socket into a current that has a significantly lower voltage - 15V. The measuring parameters of the voltage in 15V are considered optimal in order to carry out a qualitative charging of the battery without disturbing its system.

Answering the question about what kind of current to charge the battery, first of all, it is necessary to determine the choice of how to charge the battery.

  • Method of direct current. With this approach, you need to constantly adjust the current that is applied to the charge. For example, let's make a calculation to find out how to charge the battery with 60 A / h of capacity. The current is calculated from a ratio of 1:10 of the battery capacity. In this example, it will be equal to 6 Amps. It is not allowed to apply a current that is higher than 6 Amps, as this can damage the battery system. A smaller force is permissible for a 60 A / h battery, but in this case the time for full charging increases, as does the efficiency of the work performed.

How to determine the full charge? As soon as the battery is charged, it will start to emit gases. This is a sure sign that the battery is fully charged and ready for use. Another sign of a full charge is the stability of the voltage indicators for an hour or more. The increase in the efficiency of the charge will be the higher, the more the current at the end of the charge decreases. To do this, before the battery is fully charged, it is necessary to gradually reduce the current (at a rate of 14.4, a current of 3 amps is applied). This effect increases the charging voltage.

  • The method of constant voltage. At the same time, voltage regulation is not needed, but the question of what kind of current to charge the battery remains relevant. The battery is connected to a continuous voltage, while the current is mechanically produced by the size equal to the capacity of the current in the battery, and decreases with the expiration of the charge time and can fall to the mark "0". This technique is used in most cases for batteries that have a voltage of 12V. At the same time, the voltage used during charging is up to 15V.

When the battery is fully charged, as a rule, there is no excess of gas, since the charge is up to 95%. Knowing how to charge a car battery, it is important to choose the right regulating chargers for this method.

  • There is another method - equalizing, which is used when the battery is already charged by 95% and it needs to be brought to 100%. On the question of what kind of current to charge the battery in this case, the answer is the current strength, equal to the following calculation. The current is 3% of the capacity of the battery. In this case, not only 100% charging is achieved, but the density of electrolyte in all banks of the battery is evened.
