Freesia at home

Freesia refers to the tangent. Its homeland is South America. There are about 20 species of these ornamental flowering plants.

But as a pot plant grow hybrid freesia (Freesia hybrida). This plant is 50-60 cm tall, with narrow linear leaves 20 cm long and 2 cm wide. The room freesia has an inflorescence on a long peduncle and carries about a dozen flowers. The shape of the flowers is funnel-shaped, 6 cm in diameter, very fragrant (they recall the smell of a lily of the valley), and their coloration is very different: all shades of red, yellow, white, lilac, violet.

To maintain a normal shape, the leaves of the plant need a garter to support, otherwise, they will hang, break, and the bush will look unattractive.

In the article, we'll talk about the care that freesia needs at home. At the same time, we note that freesia is a pretty whimsical plant, therefore, before you grow it, you should familiarize yourself with the list of requirements that it presents. Actually, here they are.

Freesia: growing a house. Basic Care Tips

Location, care and temperature. During the growing season, freesia at home should be kept in a temperature range of 20 to 25 degrees. When the plant fades, the dry flower-bud should be cut off, while its leaves fade and die. In the same period, it is necessary to shorten watering, since there is a rest period. It is necessary only to moisten the soil occasionally, and within a month or two freesia at home continues to be kept in a dry and warm place, as just at that moment new bulbs begin to form. After this, the bulbs should be removed from the ground and stored until planting at a temperature of 15 degrees (only not in the cellars and not in the refrigerator).

Lighting. Room freesia needs bright sunlight without shading.

Air humidity. The plant prefers humid air, needs regular spraying, especially on hot summer days (and after spraying freesia you need to shade, otherwise it has a chance to get burns).

Watering. During flowering, freesia at home requires abundant watering, and when germinating bulbs the watering should already be moderate, but also regular. Since bulbs can easily rot, it is necessary to avoid excessive moisture and dampness in the pot.

Fertilizers . Freesia should be fertilized during periods of growth, the appearance of buds and its flowering. Fertilize the plant with mineral fertilizing every two weeks. Of fertilizers for freesia, Kemira-lux is perfect. Very responsive this plant also to the introduction of phosphorus and potassium: per liter of water 2g and 3g, respectively. And in the first months you can add nitrogen (2 grams per liter of water), or give freesia a complex fertilizer. Only after the flowering, watering also ends.

The soil. For room freesia, you can use a shop mix for bulbous or cook it yourself, taking equal parts of leaf and humus, and adding a little sand. The bottom of the pot must necessarily have a layer of drainage and drainage holes, so that the bulb of the plant does not rot from overabundance or stagnation of moisture. In the soil, you can add a little bit of charcoal. Do not forget that freesia at home requires a very spacious pot.

Fresian transplantation - every year, only after the preliminary maintenance of the plant in a warm room. When transplanting, the corms are picked up, leaving the best, small ones, and throwing away the stiff ones. Soil for transplantation: humus, leaf, peat land and sand or ready land for bulbous.

Reproduction. Propagation freesia seeds or bulbs. Seeds should be sown in March or April in peaty, loose soil, in which case flowering will occur in the autumn, and seeds will take in the interval of 10 to 15 days. If bulbs are planted, do this in the middle of spring, digging them completely into the ground to a depth of about 5 cm. Freesia at home reproduces very easily, daughter bulbs and seeds can be planted for a year. At the same time, a large amount of light is the main condition for care for intensive development, successful growth and flowering of freesia.

Growing freesia at home is a great solution! Although in the care it is a little capricious, but very happy with its charm and aroma.
