Forstner's drill and its application

In furniture production a fair amount of various tools, equipment and accessories are used. Something new is constantly appearing. But there are long and well-proven things. Forster's drill is precisely such tools and applies. It has a number of features.

Structurally

The Forstner drill is fundamentally different from the spiral models that are widespread and customary to most. In the strict sense of this word, it would be more correct to designate it not as a drill, but as an end mill, because its cutting edge is located in the end part. This design feature allows for large diameter blind holes with precise alignment according to the preliminary marking. This accuracy is provided by the centering head of the tool. A well-sharpened Forstner drill guarantees a high degree of cleanliness in the processing of the inner surface of the hole. This type of tool is distinguished by high productivity and long service life, while observing operating modes. The tool is easy to handle and can be used with equal success both in stationary drilling machines and in a manual electric appliance. Recently, the Forstner drill has been improved by the presence of high-strength insert elements as a cutting edge. This allowed us to significantly extend the period of its operation.

The Forstner drill. Areas of use

This type of tool finds the widest application in the furniture industry and carpentry. Thanks to a successful design solution, it allows you to quickly and accurately perform blind holes and grooves for various types of accessories.

This type of drilling has also been successfully applied in large multi-operation centers for cabinet furniture production. Drilling, as a rule, are carried out for various types of mounting joints, screeds, loops for furniture flaps. The most running diameter of the entire range of such tools is the Forstner-35 drill. It is also successfully used in traditional carpentry. In addition to the holes for the door and window fittings, they drill various natural wood defects - knots, resin pockets, mechanical structure damages and foreign inclusions. In the resulting hole is inserted on the glue of the exact diameter of the element of pure wood. It is carved by a special tool, the diameter is the same as the Forstner drill. Buy it, as a rule, you can in any specialized stores.

This technology allows you to significantly save expensive dry wood and improve the quality of joinery. The negative aspects include the difficulty of sharpening such a tool and its relatively high cost compared to conventional spiral-type drills. But this pays off the efficiency of its operation with significant volumes of production.
