Electrodes for cast iron, their types and significance in the welding process

In all branches of industrial production, cast iron occupies a solid place among various structural materials. It is used in engineering, energy , defense, transport. Electrodes for cast iron make it possible to minimize the cost of many repairs and significantly reduce their labor intensity. Extremely wide range of these products with the appropriate technological approach to their use makes it possible to form welded joints of specified properties. Thanks to them, the required machinability, hardness, tightness, strength, ductility, and other physical and operational characteristics are achieved at the seams.

Electrodes for cast iron are developed and successfully used not only for surfacing this metal and creating strong durable welded structures. Very often they are used to eliminate various defects formed in products from this alloy, for the restoration and reconstruction of parts that have worn during long-term operation. Electrodes for cast iron also perfectly cope with the tasks of welding steel, nickel and iron-nickel alloys, copper. In some cases, it is advisable to use products of other special purpose for the creation of welded joints of cast iron structures.

Curious is the fact that such indispensable material in the industry, as electrodes for cast iron, in Russia does not have standardization of the national level. Therefore, they are often manufactured according to industry and even factory standards and technical requirements. In this regard, the marking of the electrodes on cast iron includes many different types of this welding material. For example, the following brands are most common: ЭЧ-1, ЭЧ-2, ЭВЧ-1, АН-1, ЦЧ-4, etc. Each of these brands has its own characteristics and purpose.

Manual arc welding with cast iron electrodes is used to eliminate large defects of the processed, already treated and responsible untreated surface. In the latter case, hot welding is performed by the so-called bath method at a temperature of not less than six hundred degrees. This ensures a good density and tightness of the seam, homogeneity of the microstructure of the welded joint, as well as its strength and hardness. Electrodes based on cast bars with diameters up to sixteen millimeters are used.

Classification of electrodes for cast iron is made according to their purpose (for gray, malleable cast iron , etc.), technological features (for working in different spatial positions, for a bathroom welding), type of coating (gas protective, rutile, ore-sour or calcium fluoride ), The chemical composition of the core element and the coating method (crimping or dipping). Of course, that the classification category depends on the scope of these or other brands of electrodes.

The products of the ECh-1 brand, which give good fusion of cast iron with ferritic perlite structure, provide excellent welding and technological characteristics and high quality of the seam, they are used mainly for welding critical surfaces and parts.
