Differential Bearing: Replacement Features and Device

Often there are cases when the car sees an incomprehensible noise ahead of him during his movement, which is becoming stronger when the tempo is set and decreases when stopping. It does not matter which transmission this occurs, the fault is either connected to the hub or to the differential bearing. About how to change it, regulate and what it consists of, will be discussed in the article.

Differential bearing arrangement

The conical bearing is a type of rolling bearing and is a design consisting of two rings in the form of a truncated cone with running grooves. Between them is a separator with rollers. In form they are cylindrical, conical, barrel-shaped, needle-shaped and twisted. Conical in their construction are divided into single-row and double-row.

As an element of the mechanism, the differential bearing is capable of operating under conditions of high loads and rotational speeds. Therefore, tapered bearings are part of both the axle boxes for railway transport and the vehicle's hub elements.

Why replace the differential bearing?

Types of defects are divided into the following groups:

1. Initial defects:

  • depreciation;
  • Furrows;
  • Scuffing;
  • Destruction of the surface layer;
  • rust;
  • The result of the passage of an electric current.

2. Secondary defects:

  • Fatigue shells;
  • The gap.

If there is any defect, intervention is required. The bearing can not be repaired, only its replacement is possible.

How are repairs done?

For the implementation of restoration activities will require:

  1. Ball bearings in quantity of 2 pcs.
  2. Gaskets (glands) of drives in quantity of 2 pcs.
  3. Rings for compaction. Must be different: right and left.
  4. Lining of the transmission tray.
  5. Thread fastener.
  6. New gearbox oil.

To adjust the differential bearing, remove the gearbox. They are corrected on the dismantled unit with the released gear of the secondary shaft (key pair). After the box is removed, a differential is extracted from it.

Then the following is done:

  1. The semi-axis gears are released from the differential, they rotate by 90 ° .
  2. With the help of the necessary tool, a circlip is extracted, which is in the gear wheel axis.
  3. After the removal of the stopper, the axle is easily taken and together with it the gears themselves.
  4. The head of the required size, the extension cord, is taken, then the bolts are loosened, which secure the driven gear to the differential spine.
  5. Then the driven gear (it is possible by means of a hammer) is released from the case.

Now you need to look at the working surfaces of the parts that were removed, for any defects. If small irregularities are detected, they should be removed using sandpaper. If there are more serious damages to the parts, a replacement must be made. Also, if the inspection on the driven gear shows the chips, shells or other defects, then it is necessary to change it.

The replacement process

The next step is to carefully look at the location of the bearings. If there is a generation at these locations, the housing should be changed, if there are shells on the tracks and rolling elements, an indentation mark or a defect in the separators, then the bearings change. Then, with the help of the tool, the differential bearings are sealed. Outer rings are crimped from the crankcase. Do this with a special device. If the puller is not present, then the lapels of the semi-axes are first clamped, then they change to fresh ones.

External rings are removed with the help of a small beard. Under them there is an adjusting ring. Before compressing them, it is necessary to prepare new copies of the parts. If required, the gear wheel responsible for the speedometer changes. The differential is reassembled after the bearing change.

Adjustment of bearings of differential VAZ

Differential is an aggregate that allows you to break the torque when each of the semi-axes finds its newtonometers. He also corrects the speed of torsion of the wheels. When turning the outer wheel runs along a huge arc and begins to slip. To prevent this, a differential is applied.

Because of it, the wheels have a different torsion angle at speed. To adjust this element to the state of the route, it is necessary to adjust the differential.

Elements consist of two parts: outer rings, which are clamped into the stockings of the bridge; And internal, ramming which goes to the differential. The replacement, as well as the adjustment of these nodes can be done by one's own hands.

To adjust the differential bearings, you need:

  1. Loosen the attachment of the bearing caps so that the adjusting nuts can rotate.
  2. These nuts must be tightened bearing with a little effort.
  3. Tighten the bearings with nuts, turn the gear first into one, then backwards. When doing this, the rollers, which are in the bearings, occupy the desired position.
  4. To measure the lateral gap in the clutch gears of the main gear on the crankcase of the rear axle, you need to strengthen the pointer, bring its probe to the top of the tooth along the outer edge of the gear. The gap should be 0.15-0.2 mm. Measurements must be carried out for at least six teeth in the reverse zones of the crown.
  5. In order to reduce the distance, using a screwdriver or a thin metal rod, the nut for adjustment on the side of the reverse gear is unscrewed and the other is twisted.

The turning and turning of the nuts should be carried out to the same value, orienting them along the grooves. Each unwinding must be completed by tightening. This action ensures a stable contact between the external bearing ring and the nut, which in turn serves as a guarantee of fixation during operation. To increase the distance, you need to perform the same actions, but in the opposite sequence.

Stages of adjustment

  1. After the distance is corrected, it is necessary to check the play on the axis. For this purpose, a pointer to the tripod is attached, the probe touches the end of the driven gear. The backlash is measured and the part is swung in the direction of the axis.
  2. A nut for adjustment, which is on the opposite side of the driven gear, sets a play on the axis from 0,055 to 0,035 mm.
  3. Then the nut is tightened and the preload is set: 0.1 mm, if the bearing run is no more than 10 thousand km; 0,05 mm - if more than 10 thousand km. Turning the nut to one groove is equal to the "compression" of the bearing by 0.03 mm.
  4. After carrying out of updating it is necessary to tighten bolts on a cover of bearings and to establish stop plates. The side distance is checked again.

Adjustment of bearings of differential UAZ

This procedure should be carried out by adjusting the thickness of the set of pads to be adjusted, which are placed between the sides of the closed rings of both bearings and the gear box. When changing the details of the main gear and the differential bearings, do the correction in this order:

  1. Rinse the closed bearing rings on the nut so that there is a distance of 3-3.5 mm between the sides of the gear box and the sides of the closed bearing rings.
  2. Remove the semi-axles and put the differential in the crankcase assembled with the driven gear, install the linings and the cap, do not fully tighten the bolts that hold the covers, and turn the driven gear with the assembly shovel through the throat of the crankcase, run the bearings in order for the rollers to stand in the right place. Then, with the same bolts, and until the end, combine the cap with the crankcase.
  3. Remove the bolts. Carefully remove the hood, remove the differential from the axle housing and measure distance A and A1 between the sides of the gear box and the closed bearing rings.
  4. Choose a set of pads thick, which is equal to the sum of A + A1. To protect the preload in the differential gearbox bearings, add a 0.1 mm thick spacer to this set. As a result, the total thickness should be A + A1 + 0.1 mm.
  5. Remove the closed differential bearing rings. Split the assembled set of pads into two parts. Put them on the neck of the gear box and tamper the closed rings of bearings to the limit. Then adjust the distance to the sides by moving the driven gear.

Only after changing the differential bearings to make measurements and compare the height of the new and old assembly. If the new bearing is more or less obsolete by a certain amount, then the thickness of the active set of pads is reduced in the first variant and more is made in the second.

Conclusion

That's so easy to adjust and change the bearings of the differential. Also the article acquainted with their device and purpose. In the event of more difficult troubles with the differential, it is better, of course, to consult specialists.
