Device Manager and its use

In the Windows family, control over the hardware properties of the computer is performed using a system utility such as the device manager. In other words, this interface is directly between the user and the iron. Using it, the following options are available:

  • View the hardware installed on the computer.
  • Timely detection of incorrectly operating equipment and elimination of device conflicts.
  • Edit configuration settings for a single device.
  • View information about installed device drivers, as well as the ability to directly download the driver update from the Internet or a computer.
  • Roll back the device software to a previous version.
  • Enable, disable and remove devices through appropriate interactions with their drivers.

The features that this program opens can be used as a novice (learn the model of a device, update the driver), and an advanced user (advanced troubleshooting and conflicts in the operation of equipment).

Next, let's look at how to open this utility in your operating system. The XP Device Manager can be found as follows:

  1. Go to the "Start" menu.
  2. Open the "Control Panel".
  3. The item "System".
  4. In the Hardware tab, you will see the Device Manager button.

The Windows 7 Device Manager has the following location:

  1. Press "Start" again.
  2. If you have the item "Computer" in the menu, right-click on it and in the menu that appears, find what you were looking for.
  3. In another case, go to the "Control Panel".
  4. In the upper right corner of the "View" menu, check the box next to "Large (small) icons".
  5. In the generated list you can find the dispatcher.

Also in any Windows OS, the device manager can also be opened using the command line. To do this, go to the "Start" and find there "Run".

There will be a dialog box with a line in which enter the line "devmgmt.msc" and press the enter key. That's all.

It is worth noting that your account must have administrator rights to make any changes to the device settings. However, any user can log into the device manager.

And now a few words about the interface of the program. Initially, you will see a list of devices on your computer. By clicking on the plus sign to the left of the device name or device class, or by double-clicking directly on the words, you can see the list of installed drivers. To update the configuration, select the appropriate action in the menu when clicking the right mouse button. If you see an icon in the list as a yellow question mark in XP, or a small white circle with a question mark inside on the main icon next to the name in Windows 7, then it means that the driver is not installed for the device, that is, the computer can not use it In their work. You can fix this by updating the configuration, or to search for the necessary software manually on the Internet, if you know the model of the device.
