Curtains in the interior: which style to choose?

A lot of modern designs of curtain design are associated with the previous architectural styles and styles. Looking at any new collection of curtain fabrics, you can identify the influence of Gothic, neoclassicism or art nouveau (the so-called new art or modern style). So if you want to have curtains in the interior, which would correspond to some of their epochs, then the knowledge of some features of their inherent style will be superfluous.

Let's start with the curtains of the 17th century. This, for the most part, curtains on wooden round cornices with fastenings on the rings, and hidden lambrequins. The curtain fabric for such curtains in those days was selected for painting the upholstery of furniture and walls. Bedrooms in the 17th century were very large and fairly cold rooms. For this reason, canopies with heavy hanging curtains, creating an intimate, cozy space, were often arranged above the bed. As a drapery of walls it was fashionable to use tapestries. King Louis XIV himself took an active part in the design of his palace. Moreover, he even established a tapestry manufactory, which supplied with its products a royal residence. Highlighted the luxurious palace interior curtains from the patterned dark green and dark red velvet.

In the early 18th century, the owners of noble houses still preferred the fabric upholstery of the walls, but the windows were already dressed in curtains with silk, brocaded festoons, and also decorated with simple cotton printed fabrics. Especially popular were curtains from English chintz with drawings depicting exotic flowers, fruits, all sorts of meandering stems. Fashion was considered to be a collection of curtains for the fabric decoration of the walls. A little later, curtains began to be selected in combination with wallpaper, as well as furniture upholstery.

The 19th century brought some amendments to the decoration of windows. Curtains in the interior, used in this period, served as a decorative goal and, as a rule, were always turned aside. This was done with the aim of letting as much light into the room as possible. In the bedrooms, there was much less drapery, but at the same time, the very first Jacquard weaving looms appeared, which made it possible to produce fabrics for mass consumption. These machines produced many bright, colored, textured, finishing, linen and brocade fabrics. Along with this trend in fashion, all kinds of brushes, finishing braid, fringe were firmly included. Fabrics serve as a decoration for almost any flat surface: tables have fringed cloths, beds are covered with bedspreads and brushes, and on the doors - heavy curtains with extremely intricate lambrequins.

But the 20th century began to stand out with its numerous discoveries in the field of ever new and new synthetic fabrics for curtains, tablecloths, bedspreads. The creation of the "natural look" fabric from synthetic yarns has rightfully become one of the most important trends in the design of curtains. This is especially true of the last decade of the 20th century. It is impossible not to note the democratic nature of the curtain fashion of this period, as well as the wide choice of textile design for your house from a palette of different directions. Curtains in the interior of this era are as practical as possible and so qualitative that they easily "survive" until the next century.

And today, in the 21st century, this tendency in the manufacture of curtains has been preserved, and all sorts of their styles, one way or another, touch one another even within the same house. Today, windows are given utmost importance, because these are the "eyes of the room", which require a good "make-up". Therefore, if you like, for example, the style of the English house, do not need to skimp on the fabric. Make curtains in the interior to the full height of the decorated room, decorate them with fringe, lambrequins, bows, brushes, picks.

If you prefer the style of "country" or "folk", you can use cotton, linen or synthetic fabrics "natural look", as well as all kinds of lightweight fabrics. Do not ignore ruches, ribbons, loops. If you design a room in Japanese style, strive, on the contrary, to create minimalism. Use white or cream fabrics with scarlet and black accents. Remember that all interior decoration should come from the room itself, from what its direct purpose is, how you will use it. Look closely at the room that needs curtains. The interior of it, the layout can have some features that can serve as a kind of starting point for choosing curtains in the style of a particular period. Also, you can safely combine styles, experiment with textures of fabrics. Sometimes it happens that the most seemingly incongruous in texture or color can give fabulous effect.
