Causes of excessive salivation in humans

During food intake, sensitive nerve endings in the oral cavity are irritated, resulting in salivation or salivation, which in some instances may be impaired.

The reasons for the abundant salivation are very different and require careful medical examination. Most often, a violation of salivation occurs due to the pathology of innervation of the glands of salivation, but it can also be caused by damage to the glands or mucous membrane.

Doctors distinguish between two types of violation of salivation: the first is hypersalivation and the second is hyposalivation. Both kinds are caused by various etiological factors, which we will touch on in our article.

Abundant salivation, or hypersalivation, is caused by factors that are the consequence of acute inflammatory processes of the mucous membrane of the mouth. In the form of a protective reaction, reflex mechanisms appear, which increase the production of saliva. Irritants for secretory cells of salivary glands in this case are salts of heavy metals, such as mercury, lead or bismuth.

These are only minor causes of excessive salivation. In most cases, hypersalivation is observed as a result of certain organic CNS diseases. Among them, we can distinguish Parkinson's disease, bulbar and pseudobulbar paralysis and a previous stroke. With such diseases, there is an increase in swallowing, which leads to prolonged hypersalivation.

Often, patients complain of "false" hypersalivation, when the reasons for profuse salivation are caused by either an obsessive condition or an ordinary nerve. In this situation, you should contact a dentist or neurologist and a therapist. Young mothers should not worry because of the salivation of children, because the abundant salivation in children is most often associated with the eruption of the first teeth.

If the reasons for abundant salivation, are more or less clear, then with hypisalivation the situation is slightly more complicated. Here the factors, due to which the secretory functions of the salivary glands decrease , are manifold. Most often, giposalivation is observed as a result of diabetes mellitus, avitaminosis, chronic mumps, systemic connective tissue diseases, in people with Shergin's syndrome, as well as in neurotic abnormal conditions, with blood diseases or after taking certain atropine drugs.

A large number of elderly people complain of hyposalization at night, because in a sleepy position, at this age, the lower jaw relaxes , so that it opens and saliva begins. Do not forget that in the elderly, salivation is markedly reduced, so all of the above factors are much more pronounced than in the younger generation.

In patients with prolonged hypoxalization, an increase in the amount of plaque and the occurrence of multiple dental caries are possible. In addition, there is often a decrease in the resistance of the oral mucosa to the action of traumatic factors.

In order to establish the true causes of copious salivation or, conversely, a decrease in the secret function of the salivary glands, it is worthwhile to undergo several medical examinations, so that the course of treatment is aimed at eliminating the underlying disease that caused hypo-salivation or hypersalivation. Without fail the doctor can prescribe vitamin therapy or taking iodine inside. Also, the galvanization of the area of large salivary glands will give a positive effect.

It must be remembered that the reasons can be very diverse and to find out the true, it is necessary to go to the clinic.
