Bayonet-knife German times WWII: prices, photos

The past two world wars gave the concept and experience in the manufacture and development of not only combat knives, but also bayonets for firearms.

This experience allowed to work out the optimal size of the knife for trench or trench battle. So-called reconnaissance knives began to be coated with an anti-reflective coating, making their surface matte or completely black.

Let's try to describe the features of some samples of German bayonet knives.

Bayonet German (the second type, saw on the butt)

The bayonet-knife German standard 1884-1898. Was used with Mauser design rifles. Initially, these types were exported to the countries of South America. But with the outbreak of the First World, such bayonets began to be used in parts of the German army.

The implementation options for each other slightly differed:

- the shape of the blade;

- the presence of a saw on the bayonet's shoe.

Length of bayonet:

  • 445mm, overall;
  • 315 mm, the length of the blade itself;
  • 26 mm, the width of the blade;
  • On the blade's blade is a saw with 25 double teeth.

The price: 30 000 р.

Bayonet policeman 1920's-1940's.

The police bayonet knives of the Wehrmacht were made by modifying the bayonets of the times of the Weimar Republic. There are two main versions of manufacturing bayonets:

  • With workers in operation systems of abutment to rifles.
  • Decorative systems of abutment.

Due to the fact that a large number of private companies took part in the manufacture of the bayonet knife, there are many specimens that differ in finishing and small details.

The scabbard and hilt were stamped by the division SD (Nazi secret security service).

Bayonets of the Gottschaw system

The bayonets-knives of the First World War of this model were developed by Dr. L. Gottschaw and fixed by a patent of 14.11.1914. Bayonets of this design were supplied to the army of Bavaria and Württemberg.

The historical background shows that the number of bayonets "from Gottschaw" reaches 27,000 pieces.

The Bavarian state arsenal was strongly opposed to the widespread introduction of this design. The main argument against arming the army with such bayonet knives was:

- Lack of experience in the manufacture of bayonet weapons;

- Low quality of manufacture.

The variants of marking bayonets are different in view of the fact that there were many manufacturers for the manufacture of spare parts. Because of this, you can find many differences on the bayonets-knives of Gottschaw. There are also variants in which the German bayonet was with a saw blade on the shoe.

Length of bayonet:

  • 500 mm, the total;
  • 365-370 mm, the length of the blade itself;
  • 22 mm, the width of the blade;
  • On the blade's blade is a saw with 28 double teeth.

Price: 60 000 rub.

Trench bayonet knives era of the First World War

From the title it can be seen that such bayonet knives were used in short-term battles in cramped conditions - trenches or trenches.

In the trenches instead of long, adjoining designs, the success enjoyed by short bayonets, which supplied "technical units (telegraphists, bicycle parts, reservists).

During the First World bayonet-knife, German replaced long-range weapons. I must say that there has been a change in the fashion trends in military uniform. Decoration to a uniform in the form of a knife, a dagger or a short bayonet became "fashionable" attributes of a military uniform.

For this reason, compared to other armies, trench knives have become widespread in the German army.

There are about 27 different designs of short bayonet knives of the First World period, which were officially adopted by the German army units and possessed the stamp of state acceptance.

I would like to note the "ersatz-bayonet" model, which has the function of abutting the rifle (attached daggers).

Such an unusual form of the handle was carried out because of the desire to simplify the attachment to the firearm of short bayonets. But this form of the handle of this knife did not affect either the workers or the fighting qualities. In the palm of the bayonet-knife, the German lies well and the function of "piercing" performs perfectly.

Length of bayonet:

  • 265 mm, the total;
  • 150 mm, the length of the blade itself;
  • 22 mm, the width of the blade.

Price: 18 500 rub.

The Erzac-bayonets of the First World War

A short time after the First World War began, by the end of 1914 the command paid attention to the dangerously rapid reduction of not only rifles, but also bayonets to them. In this regard, it was decided to stamp the German bayonet with a simplified technology, according to which the hilt and handle were made of steel. Such models with brass hilts were used in the police. As a rule, such blades had no dales, which, in turn, made it possible to simplify and reduce the cost of their production.

Blades of such bayonets were straight, single-edged (but the end of the blade is double-edged).

The handle is metal, hollow. The handle is fastened to the shank with two ground rivets. It provides a circular hole on the side surface next to the crosspiece. In the head of the handle there is a T-shaped groove and a spring latch. Scabbards are made of metal.

Some samples were also produced under the Russian rifle of the Mosin system of the standard of 1891.

The price: 18 000 rbl.

Short bayonet KS 98

The figure below shows a German-style bayonet knife, a short KS 98 (with a sword belt) to Mauser rifles, dated 1933-1944.

Bayonet knives of this type were adopted in service in 1901 for machine-gun units. The troops began to arrive in 1902. In 1908 they received the designation "short bayonet."

From the period of the First World War there were circulations in machine-gun companies, as well as in aviation and automobile divisions. Until 1917 they were produced with a saw on the bayonet's knife. The lining on the handle was produced in different versions: corrugated leather, or ebonite, or smooth wooden (appeared on knives in late 1913).

German bayonet knife 1941-1945. Had a circulation and as an attribute of the ceremonial form. There are modifications that differ in the length of the blade itself, the number of rivets on the handle.

Length of bayonet:

  • 317 mm, overall;
  • 197 mm, the length of the blade itself;
  • 23 mm, the width of the blade.
