Arthur Conan Doyle: "The Hound of the Baskervilles." Summary

"The Hound of the Baskervilles" (the English original - The Hound of the Baskervilles) - the story of Arthur Conan Doyle, describing the adventures of the most famous detective of all time and his assistant. The first publication of the work is dated August 1901. She parted in the monthly Strand Magazine. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is noteworthy and one more thing. It became a kind of revival of a character beloved by readers after a possible death in a fight with the leader of the underworld of London, Professor Moriarty. Admirers of the works of Conan Doyle highly appreciated the "Hound of the Baskervilles": the book ensured success to subsequent stories about the detective with Baker Street.

According to the story, Sherlock Holmes will investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville. In the apartment on Baker Street, 221-B comes James Mortimer, who is a doctor in a small parish in Devonshire. He is concerned about the sudden death of one of his patients. The body of Sir Charles Baskerville was discovered in the park of his own estate. Despite the fact that everything spoke of a natural death caused by a progressive heart disease, the doctor was alert, namely giant dog tracks near a lifeless body. The deceased himself was deeply convinced that there is a dog of the Baskervilles - a creation of mystical origin, haunting his race for several centuries. The opinion of Sir Charles was shared by farmers from nearby lands, according to which, he himself often had to see a dog burning in hell at night in swamps.

Intrigued by a mystery, Holmes takes the matter under his control. The very next day he meets with the son of the deceased, Sir Henry. The new owner of the enchanted manor is on a platoon: he received an anonymous letter with threats and advice to stay away from the patrimonial nest. On a nervous basis, Henry begins to drink hard and deeply believe in family tradition. Sherlock finds in London secret surveillance of a young baronet.

Contrary to his habit, the detective refuses to personally visit the murder site and delegates all powers to Dr. Watson, who is entrusted to accompany Sir Henry everywhere and report on the situation regarding the letters.

During the investigation it is possible to establish that the dog of the Baskervilles is nothing but a mystification behind the authorship of Jack Stapleton's neighbor, who in fact is accounted for by the nephew of the deceased baronet. Stapleton, settling down near the fictional name, managed to get into the confidence in the Baskervilles in order to take possession of the estate. In his time, having learned from the lips of the deceased family legend and remembering the weak heart of Sir Charles, Jack turns into life his cunning plan. Having bought a huge black dog, Stapleton smears it with a special luminous composition and secretly delivers the dog to Baskerville Hall at night.

The cause of the death of the poor baronet was also established. Stapleton's calculation turned out to be correct: after seeing the "infernal creature" before him, Charles Baskerville started running, but because of the strongest fear and load the heart of an elderly gentleman could not stand it. The same evil genius tried to turn and against Henry, but the implementation of the insidious plan prevented Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes. The Baskervilles dog turned out to be an unusually large specimen of a cross between a bloodhound and a black mastiff, abundantly rubbed with phosphorus. Trying to hide from the police chase, Stapleton sinks on the Devonshire swamps. Holmes tries to save the life of the criminal, but does not have time.
