Analysis of Bunin's story "Caucasus": a system of images, a landscape

One of the works that were included in the cycle of "Dark alleys" by I. Bunin is the "Caucasus". This story - a vivid example of an unusual artistic gift of the writer. It's amazing how in such a small amount of work the author was able to convey the inner world and the state of mind of completely different people. To know the real skill of the Russian artistic word, you can by analyzing Bunin's story "Caucasus" or any other creation from this collection.

The image of the hero

The narrative is from the first person, but the reader does not know the name of the protagonist. About him, in general, almost nothing is known. Who is Bunin's hero? There is no name, no other information. It is clear only that he comes to Moscow, where he meets with a woman with whom he is going to go to the Caucasus.

The analysis of Bunin's story "Caucasus" is obligatory in the literature lesson. 8th grade is a stage in the school curriculum, when the pupil must already have certain skills and master basic concepts, such as composition, plot, plot. However, the style of this writer and his manner of presentation are complex for the perception of the student. An analysis of Bunin's story "The Caucasus" in the 8th grade includes the characterization of characters, the definition of composition and artistic means. But if in the works of other representatives of Russian realism this is relatively simple, then the prose of this writer creates certain difficulties in this sense.

In the foreground in Bunin's stories are feelings, emotions of heroes, passions that drive their actions. This theme was once borrowed by the Russian writer in the work of the German author Thomas Mann, but later, worked out in an unusual artistic style, acquired unique forms. Bunin's character is a man with a passion. Staying in fear of being discovered, he stops in the rooms of inconspicuous hotels. His actions are guided by feelings, but he is not able to bear responsibility for his actions.

Heroine

Analysis of Bunin's story "The Caucasus" is, first of all, a characteristic of all his characters. About the heroine it is known that she is pale and worried. This is seen by her lover. She visits him secretly, and the fear of a deceived spouse poison her happiness. But, mentioning her husband's conversation, she worries only about one thing - about the possible revenge of a man who "will not stop at anything, defending his honor." Only in the last paragraph of the work does the meaning of these words become clear, like the main character trait of the heroine, namely egoism. A woman does not care about her husband's emotional experiences, he is only an obstacle to her love and happiness for her.

Moscow

When analyzing Bunin's story "The Caucasus", one should pay attention to the landscape. In the beginning, this is Moscow. In the streets of the capital, cold rains are pouring; Dirty, dark and dark from the black open umbrellas. The weather in Moscow is consonant with the hero's inner state. He is in anticipation of the happiness that they will experience together in the distance from the gloomy cityscape, on the sunny beach. But the lover fears that at the last minute all plans will be upset, the deceived husband learns about everything and does not let her go. Paradise on the coast is too far away.

Sochi

The seascape is described by the author by a more rich language in the artistic sense. This should be taken into account when doing an analysis of Bunin's story "The Caucasus". There are also trees, flowering shrubs, and fan palm trees. The writer in bright juicy colors transmits the animal and vegetable world of Sochi. The heroes seemed to be in paradise. They spend time together, enjoying the view of the southern landscape. They are happy that at last they are together. The only thing that can upset them is the idea of an imminent return to Moscow.

Antithesis

These two landscapes create a clear contrast. In Moscow - cold and slush, in Sochi - the sun and heat. It is necessary to analyze Bunin's story "Caucasus" according to the plan:

  • Characteristics of the hero;
  • The image of the heroine;
  • Moscow and Sochi;
  • The death of the third character.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the artistic language. Moscow depicts the author dryly, without resorting to excessive descriptions. On the Sochi picture, he does not regret paints. And a particularly vivid antithesis is present between the story of the protagonist and the last paragraph, in which the narrative is already from a third person.

is he

The deceived husband is depicted dryly, in brief: a tall figure, an officer's cap, a narrow overcoat. This is seen by his protagonist. Then only the pronoun "he". Not a word about his anguish and jealousy. Only a few lines about how he was looking for his wife and, not finding, bathed in the sea, ate breakfast, drank champagne, and then ... shot himself in the temple of two revolvers. Restrained style, in which Bunin portrayed the last minutes of this person's life, helps in creating a portrait. The deceived husband is an officer. Everything in life he performs carefully and clearly. And even when he learns of treason, he does not surrender to insanity, does not attempt to find it and deal with it. He committed suicide, but before shaving, he put on clean clothes and a snow-white tunic. All this gives an idea of a resolute man and a bold, which is the opposite of the main character.
