Adjustment of valves

Incorrectly adjusted valves of the engine of the car VAZ-2101 can lead to irreparable consequences. First of all, the loss will be borne by the motorist himself, who will feel the increase in fuel consumption and the loss of the dynamic characteristics of the car. But if all these moments do not significantly affect the technical state of the engine, the rapid wear of the valves and pushers can lead to the failure of the gas distribution system. To prevent this from happening, the valves must be adjusted in a timely, correct and knowledgeable manner, therefore, before starting the appropriate valve adjustment work, you first need to study the theoretical part. This will be discussed in the article.

So, first you need to have everything you need at hand. Valve adjustment can not be carried out without an appropriate tool: a set of spanners and wrenches, several screwdrivers, a spare lining for the valve cover, a crankshaft turn key and a special gauge of 0.15 mm thickness. All these tools must be in the home workshop. It is also worthwhile to learn from the reference literature how to adjust the valves, and it is even better to write this order on a sheet of paper or print it from a digital medium.

And do not forget that the valves are adjusted on a cold engine, as the metal expands when heated, and this leads to inaccurate results.

Now proceed directly to the adjustment. After removing the engine bonnet , it is necessary to crank the crankshaft in such a way that the marks on the engine body in the front part (on the cover) and the camshaft sprocket match. By this action, you place the fourth cylinder of the engine in the top dead center on the compression stroke. According to the technical documentation, the valves must be adjusted on the 3rd and 4th cylinder, namely valves No. 6 and No. 8 (the count is in front of the asterisk). It is necessary to try to push the dipstick between the camshaft and the cam. If everything went well and the probe passes between them with a little effort, then the adjustment of the valve tappets is not necessary.

If the probe passes freely, absolutely not touching the rubbing surfaces, or if it can not be shoved between them, then you need to make adjustments. With one key on the "17" release the clamping nut of the rocker on the adjustable valve, and twist or twist the pusher with the key for "13" (if the probe initially passed freely, it must be screwed in, and vice versa). Further, when the desired result is achieved (the probe passes with a slight mesh, but does not bend), it is necessary to tighten everything and check again. If after the test everything is fine, then you can safely go to the second valve.

The adjustment of the valves consists of four stages of cranking the crankshaft. The first stage was described above, followed by the second. The crankshaft must be rotated 180 degrees clockwise (yes, exactly 180 degrees, because the camshaft rotates only by 90 degrees). We perform the same operations with the cams under № 4 and № 7, then turn the crankshaft by 180 degrees and adjust the 1st and 3rd cams. In the end, it is necessary to turn the crankshaft by another 180 degrees and adjust the cams under # 5 and # 2. If you want, if you are not completely sure of the correctness of the adjustment, you can repeat the entire process from the beginning.

So, now you know what valve adjustment is, what tools are needed for this, and what the sequence of the procedure is. Now you need to check the previously untwisted nuts on the rockers and you can install the valve cover. The gasket under it changes only if necessary, so if it does not squeeze out the oil from under it, then it is possible not to change it!
