A stateless person is a man without a homeland

It is hard to live without having your own state. Feeling of belonging is one of the basic needs of a person. Citizenship is a virtual concept, but it presupposes a strong connection between the individual and the state, gives him the ground under his feet, protecting vital interests, not to mention privileges and rights.

Who are they?

A stateless person is a Greek word, which can be translated roughly as "without the motherland" or "deprived of the motherland". In this category, people who can not certify their belonging to the citizenship of any state are considered. In fact, there are more people of this social class than it may seem, we are talking about dozens, if not hundreds of thousands, because "stateless" is a global concept.

Origin of stateless persons

To get this status you can, for example, be born in the marriage of two stateless persons - such bad luck probably does not occur infrequently, but, judging by the presence of this rule, it still occurs. However, in addition it is required to be born in a state that does not recognize the right of soil. In one of the countries with softer legislation, the child will simply become a citizen on the fact of birth on its territory. The legal status of stateless persons will also be collectively received by all citizens of the state upon the termination of their existence. Of course, this version of the appearance of such persons is not too realistic, as new places are immediately formed on the site of the disappeared powers. And here are the cases when people were becoming stateless when the state collapsed, people who could not establish a legal connection with any of its fragments, history is known, it happened in the recent past. Also, a person can be deprived of citizenship, the motives in this case can be political, have relation to security or even be ethical, no matter how surprising it sounds. It is possible to refuse citizenship independently, although the honorable debt that does not give an honorable debt to the state will not allow it, because a stateless person is a person who is not obliged to serve in the armed forces, and this would become a temptation for too many.

What do they have to do?

Stateless persons enjoy a national regime. This means that they are like citizens in everything, except for some restrictions. The rights of stateless persons are not equal to the rights of citizens in relation to elections, they can not elect and be elected. The most important right of a stateless person is the right to cease to be so, because the state, at least in words, everywhere is heading for a reduction in the number of persons in this category, as called for by the decisions of the UN. However, the question of how rich the states are willing to give their citizenship to stateless people from poor countries remains open. Individuals of this category can not become a president, and in Russia he will not be told by the state secrets and will not be allowed to fly the aircraft and will not be accepted into the party either. However, he shares these restrictions with a foreigner, who distinguishes him from the latter is that his country of citizenship does not protect a stateless person. A stateless person is a person who can not expect a call to the embassy.
