White-necked dolphin: description. The way of life in the natural environment

"Delphos" in Greek means "brother". This definition is really very suitable for dolphins. In their schools there is a law of mutual assistance, they always come to the aid of each other. There are many cases when dolphins were rescued in the water spaces of people, protecting them from sharks. Handsome men are distinguished by a high level of development, they are still not fully understood by man. In this article we will talk about one of the representatives of this genus, he is called the white- faced dolphin. This is a little studied and rare species, but there is information about it, and quite curious.

White-necked dolphin: description

Basically, people can communicate with dolphins and view them at close quarters in dolphinariums. In captivity, there are usually classical gray animals, but sometimes there are white-faced handsome people on representations.

They refer to the order of cetaceans and stand out among the others in large sizes. An adult white-boned dolphin weighs about 270-280 kg with a body length of 3-3.5 meters. Males are much larger than females. They can be recognized by large fins on the chest, developed crests on the back and massive tail. Unlike their gray counterparts, animals of this species have a small (about 5 cm) beak, thanks to which beautiful creatures look kind, nice and harmless.

The color of the back and sides of the dolphin is dark, the belly is contrast-white. Animals have 22-28 pairs of thick, large teeth up to 7 mm long. For a person, these marine inhabitants are not dangerous, but there have been cases when during the game the dolphin accidentally wounded people. So it does not hurt to behave cautiously next to these handsome men.

Habitat

If we consider the global habitat of the white-fronted dolphin, it occurs in the natural environment in the North Atlantic. From Labrador, Southern Greenland, the Davis Channel, Iceland and the Barents Sea to the south to the shores of France, the Gulf of Massachusetts, the Baltic and the North Seas inclusive.

Migrations of these animals have not been studied at all. In the Davis Channel, for example, they appear at the same time as the porpoises when the narwhal and the beluga go north. Leave these places around November, at the end of autumn.

On the territory of Russia, the white-dolphin dolphin is found only in the Baltic and Barents Seas.

The way of life in the natural environment

The animal is a schooling and does not like to be alone. Handsome men live in groups that number 6-8 individuals each. It is often possible to observe pairs of dolphins, since their alliances are strong. It happens that throughout life a male lives with only one female. If a lot of food is found in a certain place, then there are flocks in which there are about 1000-1500 animals. But when food is scarce, the pack breaks up into small groups to go in different directions in search of food.

The breeding season for white-fronted dolphins takes place at the end of summer and early autumn. In the wild, marine animals live 30-40 years. In captivity, they feel and develop badly, it is better not to separate them from the usual habitat.

Ration

These cute creatures feed on fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Favorite food is navaga, cod, capelin, herring or merlang. Strong thick teeth give dolphins an opportunity to eat well.

The Red Book of Russia: the White Sea Dolphin

It is known that animals of this species are listed in the Red Book of Russia. This is despite the fact that they have never been of interest to commercial fishing. Although in countries such as Greenland, Norway, Labrador, Iceland they were caught and used in the food industry.

Considering the population on a world scale, we can conclude that the representatives of this species are in a stable position so far. To date, there is no threat of extinction or a decline in the number of animals. The total number of adults is about one hundred thousand. With this state of things, if in the future there will not be fishing for sea beauties, it will not be necessary to include them in the Red Books.

It is very sad to list the endangered species of animals in Russia. White-faced dolphin, unfortunately, is also included in this list. But let us hope that in the future, thanks to the man's lean relation to nature, rare animals will not be on the verge of extinction.
