What is the highest mountain in Bashkortostan?

The Republic of Bashkortostan in Russia is located in the Urals and on the western slopes of the Southern Urals. The article tells what the highest mountain of Bashkortostan is, its description is given.

"The Wicked Mountain"

Yamantau is the highest mountain in Bashkortostan. The mountain range is located on the territory of Bashkortostan, its length is about five kilometers. Its two highest points are the Bolshaya (1640 m) and Malyi Yamantau (1510 m) mountains. The summit of the Big Yamantau is completely flat and represents a stony plateau.

From the Bashkir language "iamantau" is translated as "bad (evil)". The locals called it so because the swampy mountain slopes are unsuitable for pasture use. In addition, this place was considered insecure, because before there it was often possible to meet bears. Those who rode on the slopes on horseback noticed that later the horse inevitably died. Bashkirs mostly bypass these mountains side.

Ancient legend about Yamantau

According to ancient legends, the hero Shulgan Khan, correcting the customs of his ancestors, became the ruler of the underworld, and he made the transition through Yamantau. Thus, the highest mountain in Bashkortostan served as a door to the dark world. No wonder that in the people it was known as "devilish".

Modern fears

The ominous reputation of this massif was also supported by rumors that Yamantau had an increased radiation background, because uranium deposits were found there. However, scientists deny this information. Evidence of the presence of mines in the bowels of Yamantau is not, and radiation can not be feared, its level does not exceed normal performance.

In the 60s, it was decided to build a secret object inside the mountain. Various assumptions were made, but up to now no reliable information has been received about this. The highest mountain in Bashkortostan is a part of the South Ural nature reserve, and all this territory is closed for visits.

Another highest mountain in the Republic of Bashkortostan

Mount Iremel (1582 m) is a mountain massif and occupies the second place in height after Yamantau. It is located in the north-eastern part of the Uchalinsky district and is part of the ridge called Ural-tau. On the territory of this mountain range are distinguished such peaks as Maliy (1464 m) and Bolshoy Iremel. A flat plateau at the top of the Big Iremel is known as the Kabanchik, and in the northwest of it is Mount Zherebchik. Local residents say that Big Iremel is a father, Small is his son, Stallion and the Hog are their pets.

Iremel's peak resembles a huge trapezoid, the size of the site is about 1000 meters. It is difficult to find a place from which you can observe a similar panorama. From this height, you can see almost all the mountains of the Southern Urals, including the highest mountain in Bashkortostan!

Sights of Mount Iremel

Iremel ("holy" or "sacred mountain"), like Yamantau, is covered with legends and beliefs, and no less mysterious than its "older brother". On one of the ridges, a cross is cut right on the rock, but it can only be seen from a distance, and sunlight must fall to the surface of the rock at a certain angle. On the slopes of the "holy mountain" found unusual signs carved on stones.

Not far from the "holy mountain" among the marshes you can find a unique lake, except for therapeutic mud, there are healing springs. They say that you can cure even the most neglected form of asthma. In the future, the lake plans to build a health center or a sanatorium.

At the base of the mountain massif there are sources of five rivers, therefore Iremel is deservedly considered one of the largest water centers in Eurasia. On these rivers - Bolshoy Avnyar, Tyulyuk, Sinyak, Tygyn, Karagayka - you can reach the Caspian Sea and the Arctic Ocean, if you swim along the Volga-Don canal, then Black, and also the Azov and Mediterranean seas.

At the foot of the "sacred mountain" is the village of Tyuluk, whose name means "desire." That is why it is said that if you climb Iremel, known as a "special" place, and bring something to the mountain spirits, you can get what you want.

The third highest peak

Now you know the name of the highest mountain of Bashkortostan and its "younger brother". The third highest peak is Bolshoe Shelom (1427 m), which is the southernmost and highest peak on the Zigalga Range. It is located on the territory of the South Ural Nature Reserve. Its name was given to the summit due to its similarity to the hero's helmet (helmet). One of the features of the Greater Sheloma - its peculiar outlines in clear weather are visible from different points of the South Ural mountains. The summit resembles a giant tent with stone slopes. The composition of the ridge is also the Small, Third and Fourth Shelom.

How to climb the Great Shelom

Despite the fact that the mountain is a part of the South Ural State Nature Reserve, recently an ecological path was laid there , so you can go to the top without any hassle, having paid and received permission beforehand.

Climbing these mountains is quite complicated and requires considerable patience and good physical preparation. It is better to start the ascent from the village of Tyuluk through Aleksandrovka or from the town of Katav-Ivanovsk directly to the place where there used to be a narrow-gauge railway. The slopes are covered with spruce, the quartz sandstones start higher. At the very top in the summer-autumn period you can find berries (cranberries, blueberries) or mushrooms.

4th place

Masim (1040 m) - strictly speaking, not quite a mountain, rather just a hilly terrain. The name came from the name of Masem-bai or Masem Khan, the hero of the local epic, although it is possible that he was a real historical person. Masim is located in the Burzyan district near the Kapova Cave.

From other peaks, the mountain differs not only in its characteristic shape, but also in that there are residual rocks on its top - areas of high surfaces left after erosion, in other words - hills that have rounded peaks. To one of the remains - the Maiden Rock - even leads a metal ladder, on its top local coins are left, inexpensive ornaments, bind to the branches of dwarf rowan and birches colored rags as a gift to the "master" of the mountain.

In the vicinity of Masima, birch, pine, oak, linden and even Canadian maple grow , as well as wild bees, which is why the Bashkir reserve was created in this area, which occupies a significant part of the Burzyan district.

5th place

Kuzguntash (987 m) is the highest point of the Irenyk Ridge, located in the southeast of Bashkortostan. The length of the ridge is 135 km. The Irenyk consists of several mountain ridges, located parallel to each other, stretching over a distance of more than 100 km. The northern part of the ridge is covered with taiga forest, the southern part - feather grass steppe.

"Kuzguntash" means "crow stone". From the top of the mountain are picturesque views of the Trans-Ural plain.

Now you know which are the highest mountains in Bashkortostan. The names and descriptions of the vertices are given in the article.
