What are karst dips?

It is not so rare that in some area a piece of land goes under the earth, and sometimes even houses go down there. In this case, geologists begin to discuss some kind of karst dips. What is this, in general, this? Is there such a place in our country?

If to speak easier, it is a dip of a ground. It occurs when the groundwater is washed under some area of large voids, after which the thin foundation simply can not withstand gravity.

And karst dips may be different: some of them in diameter do not exceed one and a half meters, but more often it happens that the funnel reaches a dozen or so meters in diameter. If several gaps occur at once, a giant hollow may form.

If geodetic survey finds out that in some place the probability of such an outcome is great, then it is strictly forbidden to build something more complicated than a hen house!

Do not assume that karst dips happen only on land: there are far more of them on the ocean floor. They are called "blue holes". They arose many millions of years ago, when the level of the world's ocean was much lower.

Generally, such formations on the planet occur very often. Despite this, on any person their appearance makes an incredible impression, and therefore many failures regularly bring millions of dollars to the budget of the countries where they are located.

Tourists are drawn to them by an uninterrupted chain. Thus, karst dips can be very useful.

So, in Texas there is a huge funnel, which is known as the "Devil's Hole". Tourists are scared not so much by the name and gloomy appearance of the place, how many huge flocks of bats that have long considered this place their home.

Known karst failure in Guatemala: in 2010 in the capital of the state a whole house went underground. At this point a giant funnel was formed, the depth of which was 60 meters, and the diameter - 30 meters.

Then one person died. But this was not the first time! So, in 2007 the same city was already forming the same failure.

If you go to Abkhazia, local employees of travel companies will surely "get you" a tour to Lake Ritsa. This is exactly the same karstic funnel, only filled with water. In general, there are many lakes in the world that were formed in this way. They are distinguished by the correct shape, small diameter of the water mirror and immense depth. There are a lot of such reservoirs near Lake Baikal.

We should also remember the karst failure in Buturlino. This is not the name of a remote province of Central Africa, but a small village in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

He became famous after a giant funnel formed in one night right on his central street. The depth of education was "modest" 14 meters, while the diameter of the dip was 40 meters.

Fortunately, the victims were completely avoided, as people evacuated themselves from their homes, feeling the movement of the soil. As a result, only their property was damaged: three houses completely went underground, and many neighboring buildings that day received noticeable damage.
