The film "Captive": reviews, story, actors and roles

Today it is not so easy to surprise the viewer with a truly original film, able to hold in suspense. Even quite well-known directors have long been able to "slide down" to a sufficiently low level and self-repetitions. They can not offer the audience something new because of the lack of fresh ideas. Particularly sad is the genre of "thriller".

In the 90s, thrillers enjoyed immense popularity, as many young directors appeared who were not afraid to experiment. They created original stories, not numerous remakes. Such canons of the genre as "Silence of the Lambs", "Seven", "The Game" and many other significant works of the genre were created. But with the advent of the XXI century the situation again became extremely deplorable. There were a lot of mediocre youth thrillers, most of which were sequels not recognized by even the most inveterate fans of the original. Of the really successful work of recent years, it is worth highlighting "Girl with a dragon tattoo", "Departed", "Oldboy" and "Mulholland Drive." All the rest, as a rule, looked again and did not find glory in the audience.

And only recently a new talented director appeared who was not afraid to go to experiments. They turned out to be Denis Villeneuve, a native of Canada, who moved to Hollywood just four years ago. During this time he managed to prove himself as a master of a new thriller. The most notable work of the author was the film "Captives", reviews about which in the majority even enthusiastic. About him and will be discussed in our article.

"Captive": the plot of the film

In the center of the plot is a middle-aged man named Keller Dover. He led the most ordinary and little-known life exactly until he encountered a real nightmare: his six-year-old daughter was kidnapped. Together with her the girlfriend also disappeared. My father was horrified, and immediately turned to the police. But time goes by, and no information about the missing girls has been found. The only evidence is a dilapidated van that stood in the courtyard exactly at the moment when the girls were playing on the street.

The investigation is taken by an experienced detective Locke, who repeatedly dealt with cases of this kind. As a result, in a fairly short time, he manages to find the owner of the van and take him into custody. It was only as a result of the investigation that he came to the conclusion that evidence for his arrest was not enough. A few days later, the suspect was omitted. Father was beside himself with rage and decided to take matters into his own hands. But how far can he go?

The film "Captive" reviews gets positive for a wonderful and intriguing storyline. Despite the fact that at first glance it may seem primitive and uninteresting, in reality everything turns out differently. In this story, created by Aaron Guzikowski, there are lots of interesting plot finds, as well as unexpected turns. Despite the general slowness of the narrative, the film looks with interest from the beginning to the very end. That only there is a final twist, which will amaze everyone who decides to get acquainted with the picture. And how did the film "Captives" (2013) end? We will not talk about this, since all intrigue will be lost. But you will definitely be shocked.

Denis Villeneuve

This person is the representative of the rare type of people who from an art-house European cinema overnight managed to move to Hollywood. Well, more precisely, it did not happen right away, but three years after the masterpiece drama detective Fire, which was awarded many awards, and was also nominated for an Oscar as the best film shot in a foreign language.

So it's no wonder that American producers immediately turned their attention to Villeneuve. As a result, three years later he was able to withdraw his first large-budget film "Captive." The director at his disposal has got a whole galaxy of stars in the face of Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis and many, many others. Not every young director has such a great chance to prove himself. In the end, we got one of the best detective thrillers of recent years. He is shot in a rather leisurely, even meditative style. So it is hardly suitable for fans of continuous action. Immediately it is felt that the man used to shoot the author's cinema, designed for thoughtful viewing. Fans of such a film "Captives" definitely will like it.

Other works of the director

Also, we can not fail to mention that parallel to the above-mentioned film, Villeneuve also managed to shoot another film, called "The Enemy." What is most interesting, in it again the leading role was played by Jake Gyllenhaal. And, I must say, there he was fully able to reveal all his acting potential. The film is seriously different from "The Captive", even despite a similar genre.

Then came another thriller - "The Assassin", who found considerable success at the box office. But after that, unfortunately, Denis Villeneuve decided to change his focus in the cinema, moving into the category of directors working in the science fiction genre.

Most recently, his successful film "Arrival", which was nominated for an Oscar, was released. Also, more recently, he began filming the sequel to the notorious cyberpunk "Runner on the razor's edge". But that's not all: according to rumors, very soon Deni will be approved as the director of the new adaptation of "Dunes". So his affairs after the "captives" definitely went up the hill.

"Captive" (film, 2013): actors

The visiting card of the film, thanks to which the "Captives" could gain popularity, is certainly the cast. As we mentioned earlier, it includes exclusively Hollywood stars. Some of them have already announced themselves and receive major awards, others only gave hope. Next, we will talk in detail about those who won the role in the film "Captive". The film (2013) actors, director and the whole crew, thanks to the talent and diligence, made a masterpiece.

Hugh Jackman

Start is with the main actor - Hugh Jackman. This person does not need a presentation. Hugh has been one of the main stars of American cinema for over fifteen years. He proved that he is able to work in films of different genres. Despite the fact that many Jackman is associated primarily with the role of Wolverine in the notorious franchise, he also managed to perform many dramatic roles, including such hits as Prestige, Les Miserables, Kate and Leo, and many others Work for which he received many awards.

So there is nothing surprising in the fact that in the film "Captive" Hugh Jackman was able to outshine his skill of each colleague on the set. He incomparably played the role of a grief-stricken father, filled with rage. He is ready to go absolutely to everything in order to find his beloved daughter. The role was emotional and at the same time believable. In such cases, many actors overact. But Hugh Jackman, as befits a professional, was able to withstand the necessary bar.

Jake Gyllenhaal

Another star of Hollywood, which is well known to our viewers. Jake can be seen in such films as "Donnie Darko", "Brokeback Mountain", "Source Code" or in the recent sports drama "Lefty". Like Hugh, Jake is a versatile actor who tries not to get stuck in some particular genre.

In "Captives" he got the role of a detective investigating. He played exactly as the situation demanded of him. Yes, there is nothing outstanding in this role. And definitely she will not go down in the category of the best in the career of the actor. But at the same time it is unlikely that someone would have played this role better than Jake Gyllenhaal. "Captives" - a real achievement in his filmography.

Paul Dano

A young Hollywood actor, about which not so long ago almost no one knew. And only at the end of the last decade he began to receive more or less prominent roles in the films of major directors. On his account, cooperation with Paul Thomas Anderson, Steve McQueen, as well as with Paolo Sorrentino. In "Captives" he got a relatively small role. But for the time allotted to him, Paul was able to fully demonstrate his talent.

Viola Davis

This is one of the most sought-after black actresses of the last ten years. Most recently, she finally received her deserved statuette for the Oscar. But she demonstrated her best roles long before that. In the film "Captives" Viola Davis looked quite appropriate and perfectly coped with the actor's task.

Fees in the world box office

The film had a solid budget by the standards of the genre in the amount of forty-six million dollars. Despite this, the film was at the box office quite successfully. In the US, the film has collected a relatively small amount - sixty-one million. However, world collections allowed to fully recoup all costs for the production of motion picture.

Interesting facts about the film

As it often happens, there were many other pretenders to the main roles. And they are all no lesser stars than Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. In particular, the candidatures of Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale were considered. Agree, you could get a rather unusual tandem. Initially, the main role and was considered at all by Leonardo DiCaprio. For a while it was even officially stated. But, apparently, in some ways he did not agree with the director.

By the way about the directors. Initially, other, much more famous nominees were also considered, rather than little known then Denis Villeneuve.
