TDI engines - what is it? Features, characteristics

Until recently, diesel engines were used only on commercial vehicles. Such motors on cars are a real wonders for Russian motorists. Previously, foreign manufacturers (including VAG) did not officially supply such engines to the domestic market. But now cars and crossovers from "Volkswagen" with TDI engine began to appear. What it is? Let's consider in our article.

Characteristic

First note that motors with such an abbreviation are found not only on the Volkswagen. These units are also in the "Audi". TDI engines are engines with turbocharged diesel injection (hence the abbreviation). Also these units are characterized by the direct fuel supply of Common Rail.

Features

The main feature is the turbine, which is equipped with a TDI engine. What it is? This is a mechanism that provides forcing air supply, thereby increasing the torque and power of the motor. But unlike other engines, the 2.0 TDI has a special turbine design - with variable geometry. How does it differ from conventional compressors? This design allows you to regulate the magnitude and direction of the flow of exhaust gases. This gives a significant increase in power and high fuel efficiency. So, from two liters of volume you can get up to 170 horsepower of power. And thanks to the direct injection system, fuel consumption is about 5.5 liters in a mixed cycle.

Some TDI engines in the Volkswagen are equipped with a VNT turbine. This abbreviation means that it is a compressor with a variable nozzle. The supplier of such turbines for Volkswagen is Garrett. The design of this node assumes the presence of:

  • Vacuum drive.
  • The control mechanism.
  • Guide blades.

The latter are designed to change the speed of the flow of exhaust gases. This is due to the adjustment of the value of the channel cross section. Thus, the blades can rotate about their axis at a certain angle. This action is performed using the control mechanism. It consists of a lever and a ring. The mechanism is operated by a vacuum drive. It is he who acts on the lever through a special traction. The vacuum drive is equipped with a turbocharging pressure control valve. It is connected to the electronic engine management system. The mechanism is triggered by the boost pressure and the air temperature at the inlet.

TDI and Audi-TT

TT - this is one of the most popular coupe from the "Audi". Previously, the machine was equipped with only gasoline power units. Diesel units were previously considered "vegetable" and had a low thrust. In addition, this sports coupe just needed a high-speed motor. But after the application on the Audi-TT of the TDI engine, all stereotypes have disappeared. This diesel engine had simply incredible characteristics. At two liters of working volume, he developed 170 horsepower of power and as much as 350 Nm of torque. This gave a significant increase in dynamics. Up to a hundred the car accelerated in 7 and a half seconds. And the maximum speed was 226 kilometers per hour. And now the most important thing is fuel consumption. A consumed this unit for a total of only 5.3 liters in a mixed mode. You will not believe it, but this is the real passport data from the manufacturer.

Ecologicaly clean

The engines of the TDI line have been in the lead in the market for 20 years. On one of them was implemented technology Clean Diesel. It provides deep purification of exhaust gases by converting nitrogen oxides into water vapor. The system has already been implemented in practice and has been successfully used in the US since 2014. The 3.0 TDI engine complies with all emission standards for exhaust emissions. The emission of CO per kilometer is only 130 grams.

What are the advantages of the TDI engine?

What is it, we already found out. Now consider the main advantages of these turbine installations. In general, after the introduction of "Audi" in the concern VAG, the latter took the leading position in the list of manufacturers of diesel engines. Thanks to innovative engineering solutions, their engines differ:

  • High fuel economy.
  • Low noise level (hardly audible at idle).
  • High dynamics and torque.

Also, these power units meet the modern requirements of environmental friendliness (Euro-6 emission standard). A significant increase in power was achieved due to the special design of the turbine. Unlike other engines, the compressors of installations from VAG are capable of operating at a pressure of 2 thousand bar. Modern analogues issue only 1300 bar. Also in TDI engines, the injector is integrated with the pump. This allows for maximum control over fuel injection.

Conclusion

So, we found out what features the TDI engine has, what it is and what its advantages are. At the moment, TDI motors are one of the most powerful, noiseless and environmentally friendly. Not surprisingly, they occupy a leading position in the world market.
