Meningitis enterovirus: symptoms of the disease

Viral infection of an infectious nature, in which headaches, fever, vomiting are observed, is called "meningitis enterovirus". Symptoms of this serious illness should be known to everyone. This kind of meningitis is quite common. Moreover, recently this disease is diagnosed more often.

The first signs of the disease can be found one week after infection, before this the so-called incubation period lasts . Symptoms begin to manifest themselves with catarrhal phenomena: cough, runny nose, loose stool. Especially dangerous this disease for newborns and children up to 2-3 months. At this age, enterovirus lesions of the central nervous system are usually an element of severe systemic diseases, such as myocarditis, liver necrosis, intravascular coagulation, and necrotizing enterocolitis. In this case, the disease is bacterial sepsis. In this case, the disease can be detected in 27-62% of children infected with enterovirus infection.

If older children or adults fall ill with such a disease as meningitis enterovirus, the symptoms in this case will be more sudden and acute. There are severe headaches, photophobia, a sharp increase in temperature to 38-40 ºС, rigidity of the occipital muscles. Some patients experience vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, rash, pharyngitis.

Associated with a disease such as acute meningitis, symptoms in young children may include neck stiffness and protrusion of the fontanel. Also, there may be a rise in temperature, poor sleep, irritability, diarrhea, rhinitis.

As a rule, recovery after enteroviral meningitis occurs within 7-10 days. In most cases, residual phenomena are not observed.

Causes of the disease

Enterovirus meningitis can be caused by Coxsackie viruses A, B, ECHO, enteroviruses 68 and 71 of the serotype. Each of the enteroviruses has many serotypes. Epidemic outbreaks of this disease occur mainly in the summer-autumn season.

Treatment of enteroviral meningitis

When the disease is mandatory compliance with bed rest. Meningitis of the brain is treated with analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antiemetics and sedatives. Also, along with general treatment of the disease, drugs are prescribed that improve the patient's well-being.
