Local History Museum (Volgograd) - a place where history revives

The history of each city is amazing and interesting in its own way. The past of the city is closely connected with the years of the Great Patriotic War, and it was dedicated to the main museums, and the local history museum of Volgograd for a long time was on the sidelines. History of the discovery

The exhibition complex has been functioning for over 100 years. November 2, 1914 at the initiative of the local intelligentsia, a local history museum was opened, based on the exposition of the city school exhibition hall. Active participation in the creation was accepted by the Society for the Promotion of Out-of-School Education. Among the organizers was a local merchant and philanthropist A. A. Repnikov, a professor from Voronezh B. A. Keller, teachers A. Lebedev, P. P. Kurlin, K. Ya. Vinogradov.

Initially, the House of Science and Arts was selected for the building of the museum, in 1925 it was transferred to the former Transfiguration Church. During the Stalingrad battle, the museum and the entire exposition were almost completely destroyed. Only in 1954 the surviving exhibits returned to the city and painstaking and complex work began on the reconstruction of the exposition.

Currently, the local history museum of Volgograd occupies two historic buildings in the center - the former zemstvo board and commercial bank.

Extensive exposition

The museum collection includes over 145 thousand exhibits, more than 111 thousand of them are on display. Schoolchildren, students, local residents and visitors of the city do not ask themselves what to see in Volgograd. It is a city of military glory. Visitors rush to the Mamayev Hill, to the House of Pavlov, to the majestic monument of Motherland and, of course, to museums.

This territory was part of the Great Steppe, during the Mongol invasion here was one of the centers of the Golden Horde. Later, convicts and all seekers of free life fled across the Volga. Gangs of dashing robbers plundered trade caravans and terrified merchants.

In the 16th century the Tsaritsyn fortress was built to protect the borders of the state, which laid the foundation for the city.

Traditions of antiquity

The exhibition halls are presented in chronological order. The section "Archeology" presents fossil finds found by numerous scientific expeditions. Here exhibits of the Paleolithic and medieval nomadic times. You can also see relics of the Golden Horde, Pechenegs, Khazars, Huns. The paths of many nationalities crossed in these steppes. A lot of legends and traditions are handed down from generation to generation. The task of the custodians of history is to weed out fiction and tell people the truth.

The section "Pre-Revolutionary History" tells about the time when Tsaritsyn was a fortress. Here you can see personal belongings of Peter I, who came here on the way from Azov. Hands of the museum staff recreated the life of the peasants living in these lands. Other exhibits are interesting.

The Great Patriotic War and the Battle of Stalingrad are an important milestone in the history of the city. When creating the exposition, much attention was paid to this period. Visitors can see personal belongings, photos, awards, uniforms and equipment of participants of this truly heroic battle, which has become an example of the courage of people defending their Motherland.

New time

The creators of the exposition did not forget about the new time either. The exhibits tell about the formation of the city, about modern traditions and plans for the future.

Rich nature

The nature of this region is unique, and the Volgograd Regional Museum of Local History presents an extensive exposition telling about the numerous species of flora and fauna that live and grow in this territory. This section is relatively young. It was opened in 2008, but visitors have something to see in Volgograd. Here and stuffed birds of animals, and bone remains of relict animals and fish. Visitors can see picturesque dioramas depicting the Eltonsky Nature Park, the semi-desert, the steppe and the bayra forest. About the biological diversity of the edge will tell films that are shown to visitors.

Modern trends

The local history museum is not standing still. Volgograd is a city with a rich history. The exhibitions are constantly updated, new exhibitions are being opened, so that the interest in the history of the region is not weakened by visitors. Here work more than 80 people, keen on their work. In the walls of the museum, competitions, festive events are held, theatrical performances are played out. The traditional weeks and days, concerts and quizzes have already become traditional.
