How to invoke the command line: useful tips

Sooner or later, every PC user has to face the command line and the problem of how to invoke the command line. And if the first acquaintance with the console may seem simply horrifying, then after a brief introduction - it can greatly simplify your work at the computer and allow you to better understand the functionality of the operating system.

The very familiarity with the command line (it's a terminal or a console) is necessary because you need to understand what it's all about, what it's for, and how to invoke the command line under an operating system.

So the console is a kind of software product (runtime environment with a text interface), the main purpose of which is to provide direct interaction between the operating system itself and the user of this system.

The Windows 7 command line, whose commands are the same for all Windows operating systems, is represented by the command interpreter cmd.exe. How to invoke the command line in this case is a question that does not cause complications, because judging only by the name, we can say that this is done by the cmd.exe command. After launching it, a black window with an invitation line appears in front of the user, where you need to enter commands.

What can you do with the command line? Yes, everything is the same as with the usual graphical interface. It is quite logical that the user may have a question about why then to use it. First of all, this will significantly reduce the use of computer memory, which can affect the performance of the system. Secondly, very often it is much easier and faster to type a command in the console than to look for similar functionality in the operating system. For example, to find out the ip-address of the machine, it is enough to dial one ipconfig command in the terminal, while in the graphical user interface it is necessary to spend at least a few minutes searching for such information.

The Linux command line appearance is no different from the Windows command line. But, despite this, it has a different set of commands, the purpose of which is similar, as in the above system. To run this command shell in this case, you can select the application "Terminal" in the main menu or use hot keys (Ctrl + Alt + F1).

It's worth noting separately that some commands can only be executed with administrator or root privileges. How to call a command line with such rights? Yes, it is elementary. In Windows operating systems, just right-click on the icon and select the item "Run as administrator", and in Linux - in the terminal itself, type the command sudo, and after entering the root password.

Despite the many advantages of the command line, working with it will not be pleasant for all users, especially those who are used to a rich graphical interface, since a black screen may seem to many quite boring and mediocre. Therefore, to use it or not - it is already necessary to solve the user himself, proceeding from the task set before him and the options for its execution.
