How to correctly add footnotes in Word 2010?

With certainty, we can say that among professional computer users Microsoft Word is almost the first among others. Of course, we are not talking about designers and software developers, but for everyone else this statement can be taken for truth.

This powerful text editor is used for work, educational process, writing scientific articles and even for blogging. Fortunately, or to the worst (it all depends solely on your own beliefs), Word 2010 has undergone a number of very significant metamorphoses in recent years.

Microsoft Office 2010 is very different even from the previous version of MS Office 2007, and so many beginners can have problems with creating footnotes in the body of text. And this operation is quite widely in demand when writing various kinds of scientific works, so it is worthwhile to dwell on it in more detail.

What are the footnotes?

As already mentioned above, when working in Word 2010, it may often be necessary to arrange links. Thanks to them, the document can be made somewhat more orderly, bring it to a more formal view, and also place your comments on the text and references to the materials used in your work with the help of footnotes.

There are endnotes on which information is located at the end of the document, and footnotes are standard, for which the information sought is at the very bottom of the page. It should be remembered that the location of footnotes at the very end of the document, although more convenient for the compiler, readers of the work can lead to a state of constant irritation, since it is extremely inconvenient to constantly climb to the end of the document for the sake of references.

Do not be surprised at how thoroughly we are considering this issue: the fact is that because of an incorrectly designed footnote the student may well not accept his scientific work! That is why it is hardly surprising that it is vitally important to create the corresponding footnotes in the final formatting of the document.

Adding footnotes to Word 2010

Having opened Word 2010 for the first time, you probably will be surprised that the "menu" line, familiar to the previous versions, does not contain any tools for creating them. Do not despair: all the necessary developers have managed to place in much more convenient places!

After such a long introduction, let's start practicing. To add a standard footnote at the end of the page, search the ribbon for the "Links" tab, which should have a button labeled "Insert Footnote." Keep in mind that the cursor at this time should stand by the word from which you make the footnote.

Immediately after clicking on the button you will see that at the bottom of the page a special field for data entry appeared. As a rule, when writing the vast majority of studies it is required to use this category of references. They tend to note the literature that the student used to write his own scientific work, noting both the author's initials and the page number where this or that information is located.

At the end of the document, the links are made even easier. It is necessary to open the "Links" tab, where to find the item called "Insert the end note". As a rule, such links are indicated by special symbols rather than by ordinal numbers. As in the previous case, the cursor at this point should be near the word from which the link is made.

As you can see, making links in Word 2010 is very simple. It should be noted that you can also independently adjust the dimensions of these elements. To do this, find the "Links" tab, find in it a column called "Footnotes", in the very corner of which there is a small arrow, clicking on which, you will see a special drop-down list. In it, you can choose not only the location of the element, but also its other characteristics.
