How Bariatric Surgery and Heart Health Are Linked: The Opinion of Scientists

Bariatric surgery helps many obese patients restore their previous condition. The researchers found that women who underwent gastric bypass surgery may have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, compared to male patients.

Obesity is a serious problem

In the study, more than 2,000 patients with a high risk of heart disease were affected. Scientists monitored patients' health for 10 years before bariatric intervention, and then within a year after the operation. The results of the research to some extent reassured the expert group, and to some extent confused. All patients showed significant weight loss, which automatically led to a significant reduction in blood pressure. But if we consider the results by gender, then there was a clear discrepancy. Women had a clear advantage. The risk of heart disease in the group of patients decreased by 41 percent, which is 20 percent more compared to men.

Gender inequality

Good heart health is the main cause of longevity. It's no secret that most of the women live longer. And now scientists have found out that they are easier to carry out the postoperative period. Among patients who underwent bariatric intervention, there is a clear gender disparity when it comes to reducing the risk of a heart attack. Probably, this can be explained by the fact that women have a more improved mechanism for responding to gastric bypass or gastroplasty. This leads to an early normalization of biochemical factors provoking heart failure and other ailments.

Conclusion

The study showed that men and women can react differently to bariatric surgery. Note that cardiovascular diseases still rank first in the list of leading causes of death in many developed countries. And obesity is one of the major modifiable risk factors for heart disease.
