Pogost is not only a place for burial of dead people. If its roots go back many centuries, there are significant architectural buildings on the territory, then it may well become a historical monument, like Baykovo cemetery in Kiev.

It received its name from the name of the area, which was named after the name of Sergei Baikov, who had a dacha nearby. At the beginning of the 19th century, when the churchyard was opened, only Catholics and Lutherans found rest on it. But in three years immediately began to bury the Christians. Over time Baykovo cemetery grew. At present, its new part is three times larger than the old one, and the total area is about 73 hectares.

What is interesting here?

On Baykovo cemetery come not only to visit deceased relatives and friends, but also from scientific interest or simple curiosity. On tombstones, especially old ones, one can read original funeral inscriptions or obituaries. Someone is interested to see the graves of celebrities at the Baykovoye cemetery. Some like horror stories and want to get into the crypts, many of which are now destroyed and looted. There are about twenty of them at Baykovoye Cemetery in Kiev.

Tombs also represent historical and architectural interest. Some of them are the fruit of the work of famous masters. In addition, they have an original exterior design. Find the identical tombs is impossible, since each family built them according to their own taste and traditions. During the war in the crypts, Jewish families sheltered from fascist invaders, in peacetime, homeless people often hide here.

Another attention of people is awarded to the crematorium at the Baykovoye cemetery in Kiev, because it is the only one in the city. On its territory there is also a functioning church in honor of the Ascension of the Lord, built in the late 19th century. The Kiev crematorium at Baikovo Cemetery also has its own temple. It is a wooden small church-chapel of the Resurrection of the Speaker. We built it in our century, in 2008. The crematorium of the Baikovo cemetery was built in 1975. Nearby there is a columbarium.

Ruthless Time

Currently, there are a lot of greenery on the Baikovo cemetery in Kiev, and paths have been laid. But in the very beginning of the burial were located chaotically. To restore order took in the 40-ies of the XIX century Krause. The territory was expanded, refined. Even a room was built for the convenience of cemetery workers and a chapel was built. Now that there are no mass graves, the trees that were planted on Krause's orders grew and the churchyard began to resemble a forest. Monuments and crypts are in a dilapidated state. This is particularly true of those that were set when the Baykovo cemetery was just beginning its existence. In total there are about 190,000 burial places on it.

After death - in its place

Interesting is the fact that the cemetery is divided into certain sectors. People who belong to certain societies in life, and after death, should lie side by side. For example, there are sites where only professors and teachers of Kyiv University of Science were buried. Others are intended for participants of the Great Patriotic War and other wars. On the main alley are the graves of famous statesmen, as well as artists, writers and other equally famous personalities.

There are sectors in which the burial was made on a national basis. Among them there are plots of land on which the Jews, Poles, Germans were resting. The architecture of monuments and tombstones, which also has its national features, as well as epitaphs in various languages, are interesting. Go to the cemetery, depending on religion, you can through one of the gates. They resemble the appearance of temples of various religious denominations. In total there are three entrances: for Catholics, Lutherans and Orthodox.

Monuments of the Baikal Cemetery

People often come to large graveyards, not only to commemorate relatives. They want to pay tribute to the respect and respect of famous people with whom they could not communicate personally during their lifetime. Well-known artists, doctors, scientists, servicemen, writers, statesmen, artists, church ministers, musicians buried on the Baikovo Cemetery are often given the attention of strangers. Flowers are brought to their graves, and monuments, by which the memory of them are immortalized, often represent sculptural masterpieces. But some of them are quite simple.

It happens that the monument decorating the burial of a rich citizen looks more luxurious than the one that stands in the place of repose of a person who has made a significant contribution to the development of culture or art. Graves of celebrities at the Baykovoye cemetery, photos of which are presented in this article, are located here in large numbers. It is the leader in the burial of famous people in Kiev.

Currently, the bust is installed on the grave - the head of the actor, who looks thoughtfully into the distance. They say that he himself was a very modest person and such an "ornament" would be considered too pompous. But, anyway, many people come to his grave, bring flowers, light candles.

On the site number 49 is a monument, installed in honor of the popular actor Borislav Brondukov. Many people know him from the films "Afonya", "Garage", "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson" and many others. The life of the film actor was sad. He lay immobile and bedridden for seven whole years. Brondukov absolutely could not move and talk. But he kept a clear mind. From this, it was even harder for the friends and friends to look into his tear-filled eyes. A stone cross was installed on his grave three years after his death in 2007. Now everyone who wants to visit the artist and leave flowers near the monument, which symbolizes immortality and salvation.

People familiar to many

In the old cemetery is the grave of Lesya Ukrainka. She is a famous poetess, writer and public figure of Ukraine. All her life she struggled with diseases that began to overcome her from the age of ten. It is difficult to imagine how a person constantly experiencing pain could have such strength of mind that he did not just live, but created and gained fame. But no matter how Les tried, the disease won her in 1913, when she was only 42 years old. Her real name was Larisa Petrovna Kosach. It is embossed on a pedestal under a pseudonym. The relatives of the writer are buried nearby. The grave is still visited by fans of her talent, although more than 100 years have passed since her death. The monument is a high podium and standing on it half-figure Ukrainka, which holds a book in her hands.

From a distance, a figure of a man leaning on an umbrella is visible. This is the first monument that was installed in the new cemetery in full growth. In order to make it, the widow of the famous actor Nikolai Grinko sold all the jewelry. She did it not in vain, fans who visit his grave, it's nice to see a well-groomed site and a solid monument. This artist and children loved him, because he played Pope Carlo in the movie "The Adventures of Pinocchio" and engineer Gromov in "The Adventures of Electronics."

Buried at Baykovoye cemetery and surgeon Nikolai Amosov. He is famous for his activity on improving methods of operating the lungs, heart, blood vessels. He headed one of the departments of the Kiev Institute, wrote several books. His literary work "Voices of Time" was translated into several languages of the world. The monument to the surgeon is his figure in white, which seems to grow out of a column mounted on a granite slab. Behind him stands a ball with an embossed cardiogram on it.

As an everywhere

There are many interesting monuments on the Baikovo Cemetery. Here you must certainly visit lovers of antiquity, sculpture, architecture or those who prefer to think about the meaning of life and the eternal, strolling in silence among the burials. During these trips, there are very interesting and unusual monuments that ordinary people have set for their relatives. For example, figures of people, completely repeating the appearance of a person during life. Some wait for their loved ones, stretched out to their full height, others sit, waiting for them to sit down to remember. Monuments to dancers depict them in dance, pilots here with their planes or details from them, writers - with the heroes of their creativity. On other graves there are angels in full growth, crosses, candles, flowerpots, etc.

Crypts on the Baykovoye Cemetery

Probably, this is the most unusual for our time, mysterious, attracting attention and at the same time the most frightening of all that can be seen here. The ancient structures, made in various techniques, were to be preserved for descendants as interesting examples of funerary architecture of the past. But, strangely enough, on the Baikovo cemetery they are gradually destroyed and come to desolation.

They do not even bother with them and do not even know who owned some of them, whose names have worn off from time to time. The most unpleasant thing is that the coffins with the decayed remains of people who had taken care of themselves to rest in a beautiful, prestigious place, disappeared from the crypts. Inside is empty and dirty. It is not afraid to come here informal youth, homeless and homeless people. They spoil and stain what is left of the former decoration.

But in fact earlier (as far as can be judged by what remains) the crypts looked worthy. After all, to build them, we needed money, and not every family could afford it. But it happened that those who decided on this step, even invited the famous architects of his time to build a tomb on a special project. And in the Baikovo cemetery you can find crypts made in different styles. Here there is a classic, and Gothic, and mixing directions, according to the taste of the hosts. Inside the tomb had two rooms. The first was intended for the commemoration of the dead, and the second, in which the coffins with the bodies were, went underground.

The Shrine that brings luck

On the territory of the cemetery there is one crypt having its own legend. It belonged to the famous Kiev sausage producer Mikhail Aristarkhov. On the facade of the tomb is a bronze bas-relief with the image of the Archangel, after which Michael was named. It is known about him that he defeated Lucifer himself.

If, standing in front of the crypt, to see on the shoulder of the sculpture a trace from the burn, a place from which the all-conquering ray of light struck, then the help of the Archistrategus will not take long to wait, and he will patronize the one who showed attentiveness near the tomb of his namesake.

In addition, Michael of Kiev is considered the patron of the whole city. And Aristarkhov himself owned a sausage factory, was engaged in politics to promote his interests in the Duma, was a church elder. But wealth, as you know, is not a panacea for ills and diseases, and in 1912 he died and was honored to be buried here, in his own Gothic-style crypt.

Crematorium at Baykovoye Cemetery in Kiev

Having seen this structure for the first time, not everyone can immediately guess what it is. Knowingly well-known architects Avraam Miletsky, Ada Rybachuk and Vladimir Melnichenko worked on its creation from 1968 to 1981. The building looks like something futuristic. The entrance to the unknown and unexplored.

Spouses Melnichenko and Rybachuk just so imagined a crematorium. He should not have been reminded of death as the ultimate stop in the existence of man. On the contrary, this architectural refinement present at the cremation ceremony reminded that life continues, and the movement does not stop for those who suffered an irreparable loss.

The architects took care to make the moments of farewell less painful and psychologically facilitate the parting with the deceased relative or friend. Since they had to create at a time when all actions had to be coordinated with the party, not all the ideas they were able to implement. And some became technically impossible. For example, colored stained-glass windows, which were to be located all over the concrete walls.

To create a Memory Wall was banned on the orders of Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine Shcherbitsky. Party leadership embarrassed the non-Slavic noses of sculptures, which were supposed to be installed on it. It was decided to pour the wall with concrete. The management did not even embarrass the fact that the masters worked on it for 10 years. During this period they made full-scale sculptures, welded skeletons for them, laid the first layer of soil. But the architects managed to achieve a sense of ease, which is difficult to do when erecting buildings from reinforced concrete. The above-ground part is just an entrance to the ground, where the crematorium itself is located, where there is also a hall for farewell.

How to get to the Baikovo cemetery (Kiev)

It is very easy to do this. It is necessary to reach the metro station "Palace Ukraine", and from there walk. The journey will take 15-20 minutes. It is impossible to get lost, since the cemetery is located on a hill, which will have to rise and, in addition, is fenced with a red brick fence. Excursions are organized on its territory, during which the guide is interesting and detailed about everything that is here, and about the people settled here. For those who want to visit Baikovo cemetery on their own, the address is: ul. Baikova, 2. It is not recommended to go far into the depths, as it is easy to get lost among overgrown graves.

Save for children

Old-timers say that before the revolution it was customary to take care of even those graves that were abandoned by relatives or belonged to single people. Here worked as a watchman, there were signs for the burial of famous people, special guides for cemeteries were issued. It is a pity that many monuments and tombs in our time are destroyed.

One can only guess what is going on in the minds of people who are able to manage the need in a crypt or on a grave. But the fact remains. There are a lot of debris and thickets on the Baikovo cemetery. There are going to be drug addicts, goths and other informal people who do not care about who is buried here. Therefore, they do not hesitate to behave inappropriately and desecrate monuments and tombstones.

But there are those who are interested in the history of the people who found rest here. Moreover, many of those who are buried here are known not only in Ukraine, but also abroad.
