Another option from the list of corrective layers named "Gradient Map" is always ready to reduce any gamut of colors to the "chess spectrum" without any conditions, just select the "black to white" gradient in the "Properties" dialog box. To a gradient map, you can go through the "New Adjustment ..." in the "Layers" menu.

If you duplicate the Gradient Map layer (Ctrl + J) and change the blending mode to " Soft Light" for the copy, the black and white image becomes more contrast and dark.

Mixing channels

Cleverly corrects the color and the option "Mixing channels", where to convert to black and white, just tick the checkbox "Monochrome", and to "hone" the shades you can use the sliders of green, red and (to a lesser extent) blue.

And if you duplicate the created adjustment layer and change the blend mode for the copy to "Overlap", then reducing the opacity, the image becomes more contrast and saturated.

We decolorize in Lab mode

For a change, you can adopt another way of primitive discoloration, based on changing the color model. To do this, select the "Lab" mode in the "Image" menu, then go to the "Channels" tab in the layers palette and simply "close the eyes" to the channels "a" and "b".

Find and discolor

If you do not care how to make a black and white photo in Photoshop, you can discard its color without your intervention in the process, the Desaturate command in the Correction list in the Image menu. But the most untalented way to get rid of a photo from color is to go to "Image" and select "Grayscale" in the "Mode" list. Color yourself

In "Photoshop" such a coloring takes place literally in three accounts. The result will be more accurate if the object, which is to "shine in color" on a dull gray background, select on the original (pen, lasso, magnetic lasso, magic wand, etc.) and move the selection to a new layer (pressing Ctrl + J), and Then duplicate the photo and bring the copy to a black and white state, thus creating a selective color effect.

As you can see, it's not as easy to paint a photo as it is to make a black and white photo in Photoshop, but this procedure can not be called complex either.
