ABS sensor: what is it and what is it for?

The ABS sensor, or rather the anti-lock system, is a device that can save your life while you are driving your favorite car. It allows the driver to control his four-wheeled friend during a strong braking, so as not to crash into the obstacles that arise in the way of your stop.

The entire system includes the ABS sensors (wheel speed sensors), the control module (it carries out the processes of control and coordination of processes in the active and passive modes), brake calipers, pressure relief valves and hydraulic drive.

The ABS sensor works, as well as the whole system, as follows. At the moment the driver presses the brake pedal in the hydraulic braking system , a pressure is generated. It makes sure that the pads are pressed against the discs by means of brake calipers, and this process helps to stop the machine. If the ABS sensor suddenly detects that one of the wheels slows down faster than the rest, the braking effect automatically decreases on this wheel. This is due to the opening of the pressure relief valve in the hydraulic system. ABS sensor, and the whole system as a whole, reacts to the situation very quickly, and can work 6-20 times per second. The reaction can spread either only to the front wheels or to all four wheels: it all depends on the model of your car.

The main advantage of ABS is not that it allows you to reduce the stopping distance, although this, of course, is a huge plus (however, there are exceptions, when on the ice and spikes the braking distance, on the contrary, increases). The beauty of this system is that it allows you to continue driving at a time when you are desperately trying to slow down. If you do not have this system, during strong braking the wheels of the car will be blocked, and even at the slightest turn of the wheel you will spin a gyroscope at a tremendous speed. And this prospect is not a pleasant one. The ABS system will not allow the wheels to lock out, and you can avoid losing control and quite safely bypass the obstacle.

However, such a system is not permanent, and sooner or later you will need to repair the ABS sensor. You can do it in any car workshop. Or you, of course, can repair yourself. But do not take this case if you have absolutely no experience in repairing cars. If you, of course, at least slightly cherish your four-wheeled comrade. After all, different cars are arranged differently, and what your friend or neighbor does when repairing your car may not suit you at all. Although, perhaps for you it is very simple and will not be difficult. Well, it's yours. And the car too. You decide how to deal with it.

Do not interrupt periodically to diagnose all systems of the machine, not only ABS, so that you do not have surprises on the road. It is better to spend some time to check the work of all the "organs" of your car, rather than later reproach yourself for being sorry for the time and not doing something that would help to avoid unpleasant, and sometimes sad situations.
