Temples of Sevastopol. St. Nicholas Church (photo)

Sevastopol is a city located on the peninsula of Crimea. In this city there are a lot of Orthodox Christians. Every year pilgrims from all over the world come to Sevastopol to bow to shrines. And not only Orthodox, many people want to at least once in their life to admire the beauties of the city and visit its sights, temples of Sevastopol. St. Nicholas Church is one of the most visited.

Intercession Cathedral

Architect Feldman created the project of the Intercession Cathedral, after the approval began its construction. The cathedral was opened for a visit in 1905. During the Great Patriotic War, because of the heavy bombing of Sevastopol, he suffered greatly. The lack of funds did not allow the Pokrovsky Cathedral to be completely restored. Part of the building remained destroyed, but it was restored as far as the means and possibilities were concerned. Until 1962 in the Intercession Cathedral services were held. But then the sports hall and the archive of Sevastopol were placed in the building.

Resumption of work

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, the building was again transferred to the believers, but not completely, but only its northern limit. In April, the Intercession Cathedral was consecrated in the name of St. Great Martyr Panteleimon, the services were resumed. In the winter of 1994 the building was given to Orthodox Christians completely.

Description

The upper church bears the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, below there are temples in honor of the martyrs: Sophia and her daughters. Restoration is still not completed completely, now work is under way to restore the southern limit of the temple.

Admiralty Cathedral of St. Vladimir

The fate of this temple is not easy. The cathedral began to build in the XIX century. With a break of 8 years, the church was still built and consecrated in 1888. The cathedral has only one dome, which indicates the Byzantine style. But the main feature is that there are no icons on the walls of the church, they are replaced by marble slabs with the names of the heroes of the first defense, 33 people with the Order of St. George. The first buried in the crypt of the cathedral yet to be built was his chief builder, Admiral Lazarev, then several others, already his disciples, who died in the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. And today you can see their tombs.

It is necessary to highlight the most famous and miraculous icons of the Mother of God: "Powerful" and "Inexhaustible Chalice". St. Vladimir's Admiralty Cathedral is one of such temples, which have long become famous monuments of culture, many visitors, even non-Orthodox people, visit it.

St. Nicholas Church

Varied temples of Sevastopol. St. Nicholas Church was erected in the center of the cemetery. The city has suffered a lot in its history. In the photo below you can see the church in detail. The Crimean War was imprinted in the memory of the descendants of those who heroically perished on attacks to Sevastopol. A huge number of soldiers did not survive in the defense, they were buried in mass graves, now between them rises the St. Nicholas Church (Sevastopol). The cemetery is not forgotten, local and newcomers come to honor the memory of the heroes (it is very large and unfortunately can not be represented in the photo). The building, perhaps, is one of the most noteworthy in the city. The church has a pyramid. Many dream to go to the St. Nicholas Church (Sevastopol). The photo can be viewed below.

History

As it was already said, the church was built in memory of soldiers killed in the Crimean War under Alexander II, who began to build many churches in Sevastopol. St. Nicholas Church was designed by the architect Avdeev, who became an academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts precisely for this work. St. Nicholas Church was built on the donations of residents. The church began to be built in 1857, and was consecrated in 1870. During the Great Patriotic War, many churches of Sevastopol suffered, St. Nicholas did not escape their fate, after the victory, restoration works were carried out. The church again became operational only in 1988, then the cross was consecrated. And today the restoration of the temple continues. A missile of a military ship of the Russian fleet demolished the bell tower. But the dome remained completely unscathed. Already in 1971 the bell tower was restored. The whole St. Nicholas Church towers for as much as 27 meters. Sevastopol is famous for its churches, many of which look very unusual, but this building can rightly be considered a leader.

Peter and Paul Cathedral

The cathedral is made in the ancient Greek style, in addition, very much like the Parthenon, located in Greece, in Athens. Admiral Lazarev, who was buried in the Admiralty Cathedral of St. Vladimir, was a sponsor of the construction of this temple.

The Peter and Paul Cathedral was consecrated in 1844. At that time it became the most unusual building of Sevastopol. Today the temple is not fully operational, the services are held here only twice a week. The Peter and Paul Cathedral became the home of culture.
