Curved Samsung TVs: specifications, description, reviews

It can not be said that the modern consumer actively perceives technological "know-how", responding with a reaction in the form of purchasing the appropriate device. Although many innovations in the market of home appliances and electronics are really capable of transforming the device and the quality of life, most of them do not fundamentally differ from the more familiar and traditional counterparts. In this regard, the TV segment is considered to be the most established. Significant technological improvements do not appear so often, and manufacturers are looking for alternative concepts and tools that will raise the function of broadcasting a TV signal to a new level. Among the latest developments of this scale, we can distinguish curved Samsung TVs, which are not yet known to the consumer, but have already attracted the attention of specialists. The Korean manufacturer, in turn, demonstrates perseverance in the use of marketing tools. So, in 2015 under the Samsung brand came out a whole line of curved SUHD models with high resolution.

Features of curved televisions

Speaking of revolutionary technologies, it will not be superfluous to mention 3D-screens, which only a few years ago were also actively promoted by marketers. Today, the appeal to a three-dimensional "picture" with high resolution is especially symbolic, since curved screens in TVs already work with 4K technology, which provides the highest resolution to date - in UltraHD format. The very curved screen of the Samsung TV, rather, is concave. This design is in a sense similar to the work of projectors in cinemas, which allow you to expand the angle of view and generally improve the image.

However, TVs do not have to talk about such effects. The curved shape undoubtedly gives advantages in the form of optimization of the projection area in terms of improving the quality of perception by the viewer. But the main benefit in improving the characteristics of the "picture" is still made by the 4K format itself, in which most of them work curved Samsung TVs with different diagonals. In addition, like all new products, such models are also equipped with a wide range of additional options. But first things first.

Deep Immersion Effect

Despite the serious difference with the tasks that are being put before the developers of non-standard screens in cinemas, Korean TVs also give a certain effect of immersion, which "flat" models can not boast. However, in order to feel the advantages, which in principle are able to provide a curved screen of the Samsung TV during viewing, two conditions must be met. First, you should use a large screen, at least 40 inches, and secondly, its surface should cover at least 40% of the field of view. For example, if a 55-inch model is used, this value will be 170 cm.

But here there is one nuance. This calculation is relevant for models with UltraHD resolution. If the TV uses standard HD or FullHD, the distance increases to 323 and 218 cm respectively. Therefore, it is better to orient in advance to the 4K model, otherwise there is simply no sense in the non-standard design. Unfortunately, curved Samsung TVs are currently ahead of the development of high-resolution technologies. Video content UltraHD with the format 3840x2160 is not so much, and to fully feel its dignity is not always obtained.

Contrast and viewing angles

Another important characteristic of concave screens is the increased viewing angle and contrast. I must say that Samsung's competitors from LG maximally realized these advantages through the use of OLED technology, which allows to form ideal viewing angles. In turn, curved Samsung TVs are supplied with LCD matrices that compensate for the loss of lateral contrast. In other respects, the viewing angle provides the same discomfort as conventional flat-screen models. The fact is that one person in the process of viewing can only feel the benefits of increased angles. However, if the whole family is in front of the screen, then the extreme viewers will feel the imperfection of the presentation of the image in the corners.

Reflections and optical distortions

The non-standard surface of the screen with curvature changes the angle of reflection of the light rays, which reduces the glare. Consequently, the concavity forms a focal point at a distance of half the radius of curvature from the central portion of the screen. Reflections will blur if the viewer sits further than this point of focus. In addition, the Samsung TV with a curved screen can reduce optical distortion. But in this case, the opinions of experts are not so unambiguous. Minimization of distortions is explained by the fact that the human eye does not have a flat surface, but when interacting with the same screen, a harmonious perception is provided. However, critics of this theory still note that this approach distorts the director's plan. The fact is that when shooting from the camera, a matrix of sensors with a flat shape is used, and the TV during the processing and filing of the "picture" introduces additional corrections.

Visual area of screens

In comparison with flat screens, curved analogs provide a wider viewing area - and this is provided under identical diagonals. True, this advantage will only be obtained if the distance is correctly chosen, on which the viewer is located. For example, if you take Samsung 55 "TVs, the curved screen of which is optimal with respect to the projection width, then the visual increase will be a 3% increase in the area. At a distance of three meters from the equipment, the increase will be 9%, since the angle will be expanded to almost 25 degrees. But such calculations are only valid provided that the TV is watched by one spectator. In general, visual expansion only works under optimal conditions of the person's location in the center relative to the screen.

Intellectual stuffing

The new generation of Samsung TVs differs not only curved screens, but also their reinforcement with the "smart" stuffing, which is called the Smart Hub. In this part Korean craftsmen concentrated all advanced TV-applications and functional "chips". The structure of this interface involves several sections, which contain games, Samsung branded applications, multimedia tools, etc. It should be noted and the presence of a browser, work with which also supports the Samsung TV with a curved screen when entering the appropriate mode. The device allows not only to use content via the Network, but also to download movies with serials to a hard disk or USB-drive, and then through them to view the materials regardless of the connection to the Internet. It is worth noting the automatic image quality settings. Televisions provide optimal color reproduction, broadcasting natural tones, semitones and tonal transitions. In terms of sharpness and contrast, there are also no complaints. Provided in such TVs and a function of zone auto-contrast, which allows you to change the brightness on certain sections of the screen.

Model description UE65HU9000T

This is the flagship model in the advanced line of the Korean manufacturer, which can be considered not just a leader in its class, but one of the most technological developments in the entire segment. This is evidenced by the characteristics of the model:

  • The diagonal of the concave screen is 65 inches.
  • The type of coating of the matrix is gloss.
  • Aspect ratio - 16: 9.
  • The type of the matrix is S-PVA.
  • Resolution is 4K standard.
  • The radius of curvature is 420 cm.
  • 3D support is present.

Along with support for UltraHD and a decent 65-inch diagonal, the Clear Motion Rate function is also noted, which also acquired a new Samsung TV. The curved screen of the model thanks to this addition provides an update with a comfortable frequency for the eye. Since the combination with three-dimensional technology slows down this indicator, the creators used the TV's backlight, which increased the flicker intensity.

Model description UE55HU9000

This model can be attributed to the middle category. It optimally combines high resolution and additional functionality. The developers used a 55-inch diagonal LCD screen with a 16: 9 aspect ratio. I must say that this option does not lose any more to the larger dimensions in terms of providing the projection advantages of the concave screen. However, the bent Samsung TV 40 inches is also capable of transmitting the same effects of depth and contrast of the image, but still the screen with the reduced dimensions is not so impressive with the "picture". But the model can please the functionality, which is represented by accessories in the form of 3D glasses, touch control panel, built-in web camera, eco-sensor, slip-timer, etc.

Model description UE40JU6610U

This is the youngest and one of the first models with a concave screen. It is also the most affordable. As for the resolution, it is represented by the same UltraHD format, which is 4 times the characteristics of FullHD. Thanks to this technology Samsung TV with a 40-inch curved screen is capable of providing excellent detail. Also, the peculiarities of this version are natural color rendering, which is realized with the help of PurColour technology. The viewer receives a wide palette of bright and pure colors, closest to the real ones. Already noted was the "smart" filling of the latest models of the Korean brand. The junior representative also did not become an exception and received a convenient Smart-menu, which, among other things, provides access to the Internet.

Positive feedback on bent models

Most of the eulogies are rightly addressed to models with 4K-resolution, the advantages of which are obvious. In other indicators, the situation is not so straightforward. Owners note a cleaner "picture" without distortion and reflection, an increase in the visual width and the advantages of contrast. Also, there are some reviews about curved Samsung TVs, which are used to view three-dimensional images. As in the case of the 4K format, 3D technology is optimally realized precisely in translation through a concave screen. Another thing is that you can achieve the best result only with a single viewing and conducting experiments with the position of the position relative to the screen.

Negative feedback

Before moving on to negative reviews, I must say that such models almost do not lose to traditional devices. The only negative is the price. As for the negative feedback about the screen itself, they note a deterioration in viewing angles for viewers who do not sit in the center. Also, an experienced eye will also note the optical distortions that the Samsung TV sins with a curved screen. Feedback on the quality of the image in other parameters is generally condescending, but, again, much depends on the performance of the presets and the choice of the position for viewing.

Conclusion

The main question that stands today with the manufacturers of TVs: how promising are the concave screens and how to use the UltraHD format most efficiently? If the second situation is clear, then the advantages of a non-standard screen are less obvious. Perhaps this explains the efforts of marketers, who all advertise the curved Samsung TV. Reviews of consumers themselves, however, do not note any revolutionary achievements. If one strictly approaches the evaluation of a new design with all the physical and geometric calculations, then of course there will be advantages. This is an extension of the viewing angle, and an increase in contrast, as well as a deeper visual perception of the "picture." Another thing is that to fully uncover these advantages can only TV with support for 4K format and a decent diagonal. And these characteristics directly affect the cost of such models, which on average is 50-70 thousand rubles.
